Evening all,

  • Photos of green s2k below!**
I'm looking forward to picking up my new car, as in the title a fairly low mile S2000. It's pretty much a stock car, it was born in 2004 and in decent condition, though it'll need seized bushes, rust prevention work and a geo setup... Anyway...

This is where it gets confusing. I'm 26, work for a utilities company on a decent salary & full time. I've 5 years NCB, had no legal problems or other negative influences on my records, and held a full, clean license for 8 years. The cheapest quote I've had:

£1250/year for leisure use from Adrian Flux

£1599/year (!!!!) using a well known insurance search engine, assuming the car became my primary business commuter as well as social vehicle.

Really, I just want to be able to use it for up to 3/4000 miles/year for social, perhaps just at weekends. But no joy from some of the better known 'specialist' insurers.

Has anyone else of a similar age/position as me (in terms of holding a clean license, moderate NCB etc) been given insane quotes for this car, and can anyone help me understand why my demographic is getting shafted so badly here? Seems the quotes are more on par with supercar cover!

...I'm looking forward to getting involved in some meets and drive outs etc, and realise there's a strong enthusiast community which I'd like to get involved with. Very frustrated the quotes are so astronomically high... I've owned a 3.0 2006 z4 and 2.4 2007 Brera before this, neither of which are very 'sensible' cars, yet both returned quotes for around £500 - much more reasonable given my age.

Any comments or hints of alternative insurance options would be most welcome - due to collect it tomorrow and drive home (£54 for a SINGLE DAY drive home cover...)

Ouch!!

Thanks PH.
T

Oops, should probably mention the current market value is approximately £8000.

All I know is that the S2000 was group 20 insurance on the old system, which was the highest group. Not sure what it is in the new system, but I'd guess it's still high. I had a 2000 S2000 and don't remember the price for insurance being particularly high and I would have had similar NCB at the time. Although the biggest factor is still your postcode and I've always lived in low risk post codes which must help.

Have you tried adding a more experienced driver to your quote, or more that one if it brings the price down. Always say you have access to another car and say you drive another car on a regular basis, these ambiguous questions that insurers ask can often reduce the policy.

Good luck finding a cheaper quote and with the new car.

Add someone with boobs to the quote. I used to save £150-£400 when I was younger smile

As mentioned, I added both parents and partner to my insurance and found it came down nicely. Also try Tony @ Greenlight.

I looked into an s2000 a while ago and ended up getting put off by the ridiculous quotes (well over double what I was paying for a quite extensively modified gt86 for a stock s2000).

I know they had a bit of a reputation for 'difficult' handling in their earlier years so I just presumed they had a bad claims history associated with them?

Group 20. Join the OC, helped with my MX 5. Adding women may help or not. My gf adds £30 to my quote but we're both over 40 so low risk. Maybe I should add my mum, she's 70 and partially blind but has a good claims history, mostly because she hasn't driven for 3 years or so.

Thanks everyone, really appreciate the comments. I've done some research and it looks like the high insurance is a hangover from a certain group of young men who like to go sideways & backwards through hedges!

I've spent the whole day enjoying the car out in the open. Sun has been shining all day, nearly crashed the annual end year TVR owner's gathering in Chatsworth, and pulled over for some much needed rest, my heart is still pounding and the feeling of the potential of this car at maximum revs is utterly addicting. Wow, what a perfect combination of driver-focused engineering; I'm hooked.

I'll continue to check out some other independent insurers (thank you for the suggestions above)! And will see what adding my O/H will do. On the basis that boobs = cheaper insurance, she should bring the quote down by roughly £1000. ;D

Will post a couple of photos when I get this wonderful machine home!

Try a specialist rather than high Street insurance.

Greenlight
Sky Insurance
Keith Michaels
Performance Direct
Footman James
Pace Ward

They should be some to get you started. Most do discounts for OC members.

Up the mileage a bit as well. I found it better to put around 6k per year when insuring my RX8 even though it was closer to 4k

They were crashed a lot initially so insurance has always been high. I was desperate to get one when I was you get but insurance was prohibitive. Might get one some day yet - although the money saved on insurance could cover quite a few litres of fuel on a V8/V6/other engine....

Sky are usually quite good with S2k - used them for my first 2 years of ownership, but with A plan now using their specialist thatcham office. under £400 for 7.5K pa on a 56 plate - me only to drive - I'm 46 with 10 years protected NCB, one accident 4 years ago now, second car but business use included for summer runs to the office.

Love the car green is a great colour...

I was getting silly numbers when I was shopping for a decent S2000. Even so I was getting quoted £1800 at 23 with 0 NCB (as it would be a second car). Ended up with an MR2 paying £340, having as much fun.Easier to insure than my daily Type R, which takes the piss mad

Love that colour.thumbup
I wanted a Starburst orange one but impatience and bad impulse control mean i have a 2001 in Grey with many miles. hehe

Stunning things, way more involved than my MR2s or Impreza. Currently sorn'd but having managed all summer without a mental, revvy soft top i am now in the frankly ridiculous position of looking at putting it in for a few jobs and re-taxing it for January as a late xmas present to myself.

What is the worst that can happen?

I forgot to say the colour is fantastic. There wasn't many green ones delivered to the UK, as I take it. A rarity

This number sounds familiar - even though compared to your example I have 5 years NCB! I sometimes wonder what's the point of having NCB at all! :@

I did watch a carthrottle video about MR2's, older ones were a bit twitchy weren't they? I like the ones with the boxy side grilles and turbo engines. Proper 90's raider looks.

All,

Thanks for the comments on the colour! I saw it whilst trawling the classifieds and that same moment picked up the phone to snap it up. Despite having not much money and no storage for it (yet!).

More photos will follow as a way of my saying thank you for the feedback. (;

Turns out Autumn really is the best season for photography of a green roadster...

I think you should go ahead and treat yourself - I have a feeling mine might spend a few months tucked up in the garage under a cover, until it can become my daily & weekend joyrider whilst my bike eats up the commuter miles!
