A friend of mine has just bought a 99 impreza turbo which is presently totally standard but he would like to tweak it for a little bit more power and asked me what I thought. Unfortunately my knowledge on Impreza's is a little thin so I thought posting here may be a good place to garner some ideas and opinions.
Basically he has between 500 and 1000 pounds to spend not a lot I know and is looking for the best possible gains with things that are not irreversible. I know its not a lot but there must be dump valves, filters, exhausts, chips etc. I would imagine larger intercoolers are well out of this price range?
All advice greatly appreciated....

Be careful with induction kits, if you go for an oily like K&N it can cause problems with the already troublesome MAF sensor, definately agree with the exhaust bit, I beleive a full decat with downpipe makes the most bang for buck difference.
I've got the PPP kit on mine (bought bit by bit secondhand on scoobynet for c.£600(rrp£1800)) which offers a mild and safe tweak, it all depends on how far you want to go.

Decent free flowing exhaust and an ECUTek "Tek 3" remap from someone like Bob Rawle. (Don't bother with PPP - the game has moved on since the MY99 PPP ECU was made)
There's plenty of reasonable exhausts advertised on Ebay and Scoobynet...
This should get him up to about 270 bhp from 215 well within the budget.
Don't put an induction kit on a MY99/00 Impreza unless you like having engine rebuilds...
As stated, the MAF sensor is "troublesome"
Any spare money should be put into getting a knock-link. This detects detonation, and will display a warning if there are any problems. Mine has saved my Scoob's engine countless times.

Oh and after that if he still wants more, he should consider a front entry TD05 turbo, an STi version 5 or 6 intercooler (pretty much a direct fit) and an uprated fuel pump.
These should be good for 300+ bhp and decent torque with some tweaks to the ECU mapping. Bob will do these for a small sum if he did the original Tek 3 map IIRC.
They're a little over budget unless he's prepared to wait for them to come up 2nd hand at the right price.
