Hi,

Anybody had any experience with the BEAMS 3S-GE in, preferably the Rev 5 MR2, or Altezza?

Saw an MR2 for sale, Rev 5 BEAMS engined, which is interesting, but I have also heard (maybe speculation) that they do not produce near the 200hp quoted, typically around 170hp......

I cant see this being the case; standard late spec 3S-GE develops 167 ish hp so either the engineers working on the BEAMS development had a few weeks in the sun and just painted the head red when they realised they had'nt done any work, or........... some guy (or girl) somewhere bought a old abused unit, 'stuck' it in their car and dyno'ed it and got 'only' 170ish hp???

I would like a quick NA car, but im not preppared to pay through the nose for a car that aint any faster than its much cheaper cousin....

Cheers Folks

ps. Did they come standard with an LSD?

IIRC, the BEAMS MR2 has a 3S-GE with VVTi. Not many about. They do come with close to 200bhp as standard. They were the last of the MKII MR2's.

The Rev1 & 2 N/A's had 158bhp and the Rev3, 4 & 5 (not BEAMS) had 173bhp as standard.

Words of advice - GO FOR IT!!!!

Like anything special, make sure it's got full history with receipts.

The owner of MR2OC has one with exhaust and induction "upgrades".

For more info check out imoc.co.uk and mr2oc.co.uk

Thanks for the replys. Here is the particular car I was looking at.

There isnt much service history at all, but only has around 40k on the clock.... and the price isnt too bad either considering age and mileage

Only thing im not too sure about now is the colour........

Looks like an interesting motor - Ohlins suspension is excellent kit too.

Maybe this is a test of my Pistonheadness.........

Great car but bad colour.

Should I go for the perfomance over looks........??? or succumb to something more frivolous....???

I like the colour, quite unusual for a MR2.
With the Toyota 3sge Beams engine is it mainly the Yammy head that gives it the extra ponies, or has it been fettled elsewhere? ...like witch-craft or some thing

The colour isn't that bad, and gold is coming back into fashion, apparently
Looks like a good deal, depending on how it drives.

Good call, it looks sexy from that overhead shot!

Edit: just twigged it's a hardtop too, double-good-call... Didnt realise they made 200hp with the standard redline too, it should be quite punchy!

Well the plot thickens...........

Quite a wee discussion going on at MR2OC, with the car possibly have been bashed front and back, engine transplanted, or not even a rev5 at all...!!!!

Who knows, but im getting nervous, dont get it (and pay for it) til Saturday.........

Having had a quick flick through I wouldn't let it bother you too much. The car has the beams engine, and as long as it feels good to drive why worry?

That said, if I was you I'd loose the deposit and buy a tubby instead...

I'm everso slightly biased in these matters

although the Beams IS a very fast car... Not a great deal of difference in the real world, as long as the tubby remains standard.

I too was one of the first members on the OC. I am still good mates with Colin (BBT) and sometimes say hi to the rest of the old regulars. I didn't like the way the forum was going and gave up being a moderator on it. I very seldom spend any time on there now. IMOC is a much better place to be - people seem more sensible

Well done on the purchase! I hope it all matches up to your expectations!

Yes mate, you might also remember carting colin and myself around the site with us sat in your boot

Although I wasn't parked up on the OC stand as I previously commited to TOC before the OC had a pitch sorted. IIRC, the OC were originally sharing stand space with TOC, but then moved onto a seperate overflow pitch that originally belonged to TOC...???
