Hi,

I've got a 1994 1.8 Eunos Roadster, 55k miles, which has developed a squeal that only occurs when starting from cold.

I've recently had the belts, pulleys and tensioners changed, but the squeal stayed exactly the same.

A bit more detail:
- the squeal is always the same pitch, and when it stops (after about 10 seconds), the revs rise by 200 or so.
- engine very hesitant when cold below 4k revs (to the point that to pull away from cold, you pretty much need 4.5k revs and feed the clutch in slowly to avoid stalling)
- I've got aircon, and when switched on the engine goes very sluggish and unbearably noisy above 4k revs

Now these problems could be related, or entirely separate from each other - but just wanted to share with you to see if you've got any ideas!

Cheers for now,
Darren

Sounds like the tension in the air-con belt is wrong.

When a new belt has been fitted you often find they will stretch in a short period and need readjusting. After that they will be fine.

When you start your car, without moving it turn the steering back and forth. Does the squeal change? If not its not the PAS. Try turning on all the electrics after starting the car, main beam, HRW, fan full on etc. If no change in squeal its probably not the alternator.

If the squeal changes by switching on the air-con (like you say,) there's the problem.

I recommend you try adjusting them yourselves, as its a problem that might repeat itself, and belt tension is something worth keeping an eye on, checking when you dip the oil sort of thing.

Could be the alternator, and it might on it's way out, if a belts slipping or it's new it may not be charging correctly, also the pull away thing could be the usual plug/HT lead/coil pack related in an MX5, pull em and check em all!

Good luck.

Hi all,

Thanks ever so much for the replies - in particular the post about WD40 on the belts. I'll give all the above a go this weekend (one at a time, of course), and see how it goes.

I've heard about the coil problem before - looking at the prices of a new set, it's a costly thing to have to change. Grrr...!

Cheers,
Darren
