Im a big fan of the WR1 and i have great respect for them, i even considered getting one myself but they were out of my price range at the time so i had to settle with the same colour, but, if i was in a position where i was spending that kind of cash, i would look into a 56 or 07 sti with PPP. The car has moved on and although the WR1 is a serious piece of kit the new Sti with PPP is now a cut above, in my opinion anyway
That said, if your looking for something different, you cant go far wrong with the WR1!!

Didn't like the "all or nothing" power delivery of the 2.0 ltr - the 2.5 is much more progressive and driveable. Interior's not bad, either. Went for an RB320 in the end - a hoot! That said, if your looking for something different, you cant go far wrong with the WR1!!
Oh, and they burn fuel like nothing I've ever driven (19-20 mpg not unusual) -made my old 996 C4 look positively economical.
Lack the nth degree of character mind, just so very undramatic & capable.

...well you asked!
Definitely the RB over the STi PPP - more compliant and controlled on 18" wheels and trick Bilsteins than the 17" and standard suspension on the STi. Likely to continue to have excellent residuals too, as the last "proper" Impreza now the Impreza hatch has been launched.

What about a used 06/07 Litchfield Type25 for similarish or same money as an RB320?? 415bhp/420lbft, AST Adjustable suspension and other mods. The Spec C looks very cool with the roof vent and very nice Speedlines. http://www.type-25.com/index.asp#1

Can i ask why Porsche to Impreza???
I have been hinking of going the other way as i will soon be slumming in on public transport, and was thinking of a C4S for a weekend toy
Sure thing. I have been hinking of going the other way as i will soon be slumming in on public transport, and was thinking of a C4S for a weekend toy
1. I've had the 911 for three years and it's been GREAT. I'm only using it at weekends (and then only usually one day a week) and with the finance payments, insurance and warranty/servicing it's costing nearly a grand a month!!! An 18k Impreza will be less on the finance and still be good fun to drive, while being cheaper overall.
2. Room/space/four wheel drive. I've got a bit older now, my Mum can't get in an out of the 911 easily, and I want something with some space and plenty of GO! An RS4 is doable but again it's into 40k+ territory. Didn't like the EVO VIII I tried, but the WR1 felt fantastic, went like hell, and looked gorgeous. Like a baby RS4.
3. Seems to have a good owners' club and scene. Great fun to drive - won't have to worry about it quite so much as it's only going to be tying up 15k.
Porsche has been a wonderful toy, and I haven't once regretted it, but I'm after something which is more of a rocket powered holdall now, while reducing my motor related outgoings....
Mine's for sale BTW, 13 month Porsche warranty and getting its service this weekend so it needs nothing for 12 months. I'll put an advert in the Classifieds later.

Have a look at:
http://www.wr1oc.co.uk/forum/portal.php
The WR1 was the spiritual followup to the P1. I haven't driven one but it uses the later chassis which is heavier but improved. I think it'll be hard to go wrong with one to be honest.
I test drove the Type 25 which was impressive, but felt the power dominated the whole experience and it lost some of the balance that other STis seemed to have. The second hand one I drove also felt a bit loose but that may be down to unfamiliarity with the AST setup. Oh, and the final killer blow was the equal length exhaust headers - it lost the scooby throb and became a drone like the Evos. Entirely a personal view I admit.
Bear in mind (if this is a consideration) the WR1 will continue to depreciate though, and probably quite quickly looking at the scooby market today. There are also other more hardcore scoobies such as the Type RAs that you might want to try and will have already seen this loss.
I have driven an RB320 and it was sensational although they are holding their value very well right now.
There is the occaisional 22b around too

Fair comment about the T25 Smiffy nice to find an opinion from someone that's driven one.
You can now pick up an 06/07 used T25 c. £35K, 22b are around low to mid £20K/£25K, RB320 are still around £28K/£30K and the WR1 must be £16K/£19K for a good one.
Quality scoobs are still making good money and new hatchback scoobs are making sure of that

If I was looking at Scoobies then I'd be trying to track down a Spec C
I looked around at a couple of WR1s and they are serious pieces of kit. In the end I went for a brand new STi PPP, mainly because I wanted a brand new car for once in my life (managed to get a good deal, aprox £24k with delivery miles and a PPP fitted).
The Hawk eye STi PPP is certainly easier to drive then the WR1. The 2.5 engine makes for much better pick up and more comfortable cruising.
There's not a lot to look out for really. Make sure any car comes with a full history, all the usual really. Clutches tend to suffer a bit due to the AWD system so listen out for any untoward noises in the transmission. Also keep an ear out for clonks and bangs from the diff. Check any mods are sensible and done properly. Other than that scoobies are, in the main, bullet proof.

I might go for a bargain new car with three years warranty.
Any recommendations on what I might look for? Presumably an STI PPP UK Car?
