My rx8 has only done 58 000 miles is it normal for them to need gearbox repairs around the 60k mark?

Couple of months ago it did have a catastrophic failure of 2 ignition coils and burnt out the inside of the catalytic converter. Would this possibly have anything to do with the current problem.

Also it was only serviced and MOT'ed on the 3rd of June and the problem started on the 5th after less than 200 miles. I could not get it to a garage for a proper fix before that as I was in Orkney. I took it to a garage in Orkney and the mechanic said that it was the main bearing and would last until I was home (which it did).

What is the problem? Noisey or gear selection?

AFAIK it isn't a wide spead issue. Get over to www.rx8ownersclub.co.uk and ask, they are a helpful bunch.

Gears work fine. There is a noise coming from the gear box like metal spinning round and round the inside of the gearbox. The noise stops when you engage the clutch. Also the noise stops when you are in 5th gear. All other gears make the noise. 1st and 2nd are the worst.

I had a look on the owners club and did a search but could not find any threads about gearbox problems.

If the noise is after a run and in neutral then it's quite normal. I panicked when mine first did it but it was never a problem.

Have a look here

It started when the car was moving.

Series 1 or R3?

The R3 boxes are becoming more and more common for noises and failures

It sounds very similar to what I had. Its a gearbox out job. Its a bearing thats gone. Cost me £700. Good luck
