Poor warm starting is usually a sign of poor compression, I'm afraid. The better starter will mask the problem for a while. Best to get the compression check done at a dealer or rotary specialist.

Mate has an RX8 that starts on the button when cold.

When hot (e.g. after filling up) it takes over 30 secs of constant turning over before it fires up.

This is after its properly warmed up (he is aware of short trips flooding).

Will a new (allegedly faster) starter motor fix this?

This is a sign the compression has gone. It will need a rebuild. You need to be careful with these engines they are sensitive to oil and use premixing. A faster starter motor is a temporary mask of this problem and definitely not a fix. It will definitely get worse quickly.
