Dougal,
Which Country did you import your Subaru from ? and what are the pros and cons to doing this ?
I meet some one a few weeks ago that had imported one from Holland and seemed very happy with it, but I wondered what the deal was with insurance and parts ?
Did you have to wait a while to get a UK spec one made up ? Can you recommend the dealer ??
Thanks for your help

I had a stupidly big grin on my face when I was driving round yesterday. I have been guilty of whizzing the engine up briefly, I couldn't help myself, and it really does absolutely stonk along!! The worst thing is you get it up to 100mph and it just wants to keep going faster & faster.
Also took it around a few wet roundabouts just to see how much it would take to unstick it. It had a stupidly high level of grip and it was so easy to coax it around on the absolute limit. The brakes are quite simply awesome and have loads of feedback as well.
All in all loving every moment of driving it.... time for some Elise whipping time!!

Sam,
I would say that importing the Scooby was no more difficult than buying new over here, just different forms to fill in.
Pro's are:-
I saved 7.5k, therefore had to borrow 7.5k less, therefore saved another 1k.
I actually got it quicker (5.5 months) than if I had ordered new in the UK (7 months).
Excellent service from the dealer/Subaru Nederland, they even have a UK helpdesk!!
Main dealers always service them, it's only the Jap Grey imports they don't touch (some different parts).
Parts are the same as the UK cars, eerr, because it is a UK car.
Telling people who bought their car in the UK how much you paid for yours.
Cons are:-
1 year warranty instead of 3, but this can be bought via 3rd party in the UK, unlikely that you would need it anyway.
Worth slightly less when coming to sell, maybe 1k, god knows why.
Dealers give you crap about imported ones having problems etc, just cos they are pissed off you could buy the car cheaper than them! One tried to tell me that cars imported cars from Europe had different gearboxes and they let go, what complete and utter crap, the car was a full UK spec car, the only difference being it was delivered to Holland instead of the UK.
You have to get your own Cat 1 alarm fitted.
You have to go and get it from Holland, was a nice day out though.
Not many cons really, it's easy to do and very satisfying, if you want more specific advice on Customs and Excise, contacts at Subaru Nederland, DVLA etc, mail me off line at tvrdoug@hotmail.com.
Well worth it and moves you up the car value ladder without the expense.
PS, didn't do it with the CTR as there weren't any really great savings to be had, also, I walked into the Honda dealer just as someone had cancelled their CTR order and it had already been delivered to the dealer, so I basically walked in then walked out with a new CTR!!
I only went to test drive one!

Thanks for your comments folks. My CTR has been ordered (in black). I managed to get a few hundred off the list price in the end so I'm happy - I was getting ready to pay the full list.. The car is due "sometime in July" which seems like forever already. I am not normally one to wish my life away but that sometime in July can not come quickly enough!

I've had my CTR for 5 months now and i'm starting to worry about the condition of my heart ! I took it out yesterday for no other reason than to push it to it's limits. Embarissingly , i failed . This thing has such grip that it almost rewrites the laws of physics. I'd been building up slowly to yesterday on a piece of road i know inside out, but despite my heart being in my mouth, the back end barely moved. I know i was close to the limit but to be honest, i think i must just be a big girl or something.
I'm 8000 miles in already, and i'm still not tired of seeing the heads turn as i drive by.
Saw my first CTR (in local area) yeterday. Halfords car park. If it was your's (looked good in red) and your reading this by any remote chance, what were you buying from Halfords? I'm just nosey !

I got 31mpg on Optimax going down the A303 in bank holiday traffic to Cornwall. That tank included 60 miles slowly down single track lanes when there - I think it would have been about 34mpg for the journey down. About 30mpg coming back up the M5/M4; traffic jams on M5 then steady 100-110 on the M4 (that's the name I give to my private drive, of course, not to be confused with the motorway which leads from Bristol to London )
That was all fully loaded, 4 people in the car with luggage in the boot and between the rear passengers. Slowed the car down a bit so it must have been a substantial amount of weight!
I managed a realistic 32mpg going to Ludlow, into Wales, and back without using the VTEC zone once, which was pretty good too.
VTEC causes it to fall - my worst is two consecutive tanks at 23mpg (450-ish miles in total, a very nice blat )

I wasn't at Wakefield i was at Darlington, but anyhow, nice to see your pooch will be strapped in safely, i just hope he dosen't click your seats like mine did .
As for fuel economy.... well i know i can do 203 miles doing around 80-90mph mostly for £18 at around 74p/litre....if you want that in mpg then you can do the maths!

My red CTR has been to Halfords in Wakefield. I was looking for something to keep my pooch safe & also a cargo net for the boot.
No cargo net found!
Have a look here - www.letsoffroad.net/type-r-bits.jpg - this is the list of options Honda do for the car, and theres a cargo net there...
