Yep, "Honest John" has to be the worse to date, doesn't even name BMW in his article - bit.ly/QVdKHH

They might well do. But it's a long time to wait until January, which is when Clarkson says TG will be back. (He might be wrong.)
sent them a couple of emails and not even a response so far

It's "BMW" plus the date the stickers were designed.

I doubt BMW will be very happy you've placed their name on the sticker and you'll almost certainly require their permission to do so.

This is only my personal view having used brand names on various marketing and information items we've produced over the years.

Why? If these designs were being sold and BMW were selling similar stickers, these stickers would infringe upon their trademark. As neither of those conditions applies, there can be no infringement. As it is, no permission is needed, just as permission is not needed to write the letters BMW on a piece of paper or type them in this forum.

The implication is BMW have a problem by virtue of the fact it's on there...... that's the issue. If you didn't want to advertise you have a problem would you let stickers be printed with your name on them - probably not.

Anyway it's not my problem, just my previous experience and I suggest a quick call to BMW Bracknell will confirm either way.

As there is no logo/trademark/corporate style being used all I see are three letters that could refer to anything.

it was a neat idea... did you also see the OBD PORT OFF SO F**K OFF one? thought that a little too provocative so have tried something plain and straight to the point (also icon of OBD as english isnt first language for some the ringers) hopefully clearly sign posts.

as my X5 is due back from the repair shop i thought id sticker up along with an extra alarm, a couple of mods, disabled OBD, tracker, approach sensor, disklock smile

just to clarify, im not selling anything. these are designed for personal use (for a problem BMW says does not exist) it would be like saying you couldnt advertise in the classified print ads using BMW. there is no breach of any copyright law or infringement of any IP (i work for one of worlds largest advertising agencies so deal with this daily). it clearly labels for any returning gang member that this has been done post the last attempted theft smile no logo, no branding, its name and date and id rather have a sticker saying no OBD port access than them breaking in (again) and trash the car trying to figure it out!

Not knocking your impressive handiwork or efforts to get this problem tackled at all, but I suspect that the thief will break in and try it anyway as it only takes a few minutes to check the OBD port and it's relatively risk free as far as stealing a £20k+ car goes.

Again though, it's certainly better than nothing! thumbup

Ah, so it's action for defamation you are concerned about. If you were right to be concerned, then almost everyone who has posted on this thread should be quaking in their shoes, since far more potentially defamatory things have been said here about BMW than are said (or rather, aren't said) on the sticker.

Moreover, very little posted here (and nothing on the sticker) is actually defamatory, since the claims about a security weakness are true, and the fact that one is telling the truth is a complete defence against a charge of defamation.

Feel free to ring up BMW if you like, or just cower in misinformed terror. Neither action is justified and neither will serve any purpose.

I appreciate you're not selling, but was simply offering my experience in the past. BMW can if they want to get very stroppy and decide to take further action should they feel they are being seen as the bad guy.

As mentioned, a quick call out of courtesy would clarify the matter either way.

Quite possible. But if you don't have the sticker, and find yourself with a broken window or worse, you'll have plenty of time to wonder whether having a sticker would have saved you the inconvenience.

This general line of thought, 'I'm not going to bother taking a precaution because it might not work', is always unsound.

Even better when used in combination with something (i.e. a port that is actually disabled).

Are you a BMW spokesperson in disguise? In this country it is the law, not BMW, that dictates what we may or may not do.
