And affects all new bmw's the guy presenting was stood next to a new z4
Because the current Z4 is an E Series car, not an F Series. It's on the E90 platform and hence shares its electronics system. This is why a new Z4 is affected but a new 5 or 3 Series is not.

This is what I was thinking. I didn't think BMW had released a newer version of the Z4 on the new chassis.

Can Mr Bimmer shed any more light on this?

this isn't to do with obd ports and the update so I was led to believe today
This is now a different way and the newer cars are as vulnerable as the slightly older
But hey it was just what I was told today, just trying to be helpful but hey ho

I appreciate the information and I wasn't trying to dismiss what you'd said. No offence was meant.

I suppose I'm just trying to convince myself that my new car is more secure than my old one (which someone tried to steal using the OBD hack).

I won't ask what the loophole is, but from which stage in the BMW theft chain did you get this info? i.e a dealer, a car thief, a policeman or an owner whose car was stolen/recovered. (Not being facetious just interested to know).

Not a tough """t attitude at all. It just peeves me to see folk blaming everyone but themselves when their p&j gets stolen. Take a few preventative measures for yourself and it probably won't be stolen.

Most TV clips are well behind the times and just looking for dramatic headlines.

Talk of BMWs getting to the stage of being uninsurable is completely ridiculous. My insurance halved this year.

I'm not aware of any new shape 3 or 5 series being stolen without keys. Usual vehicles are 2/3:5 series, 2005-2010 via OBD ports.

My E92 335d was stolen last night. Software update done. Keys still in house.
How old was your car and are you 100% sure you had the security update?
2008 and yes it had the software update last September. Obviously the thieves are one step ahead of BMW though.

I can confirm you can buy and program a blank key for the Fx series by using the ODB Port on the car or from using an existing key. You can also start the ignition from the ODB port. The problem is this data is not encrypted, a serious failing by BMW.

I believe what thieves are doing is picking the locks and then plugging in their gadgets to deactivate the alarm/start the ignition.

Edit: I should add - the video shown on Sky News from Youtube shows how easy it is to steal a brand new Range Rover using the ODB Port. I am somewhat cautious of posting that video as the uploader is one of the companies that sells these 'devices'.

Well insurance renewal has come thought for the 5 GT.

It has more than doubled with no claims or other issues.

Phoned around and asked - apparently the F is seen by the insurance companies as vulnerable and so my insurance is now almost 2k.

Thankfully the lease is about to expire.....

My F21 135i was cheaper to insure than my e46 330i when I insured it 3 weeks ago

So you are 100% sure that you had the security update (not just a software update) and your car was stolen using a cloned key via the obd port?

Any chance that you could ask the dealer who did it to give you a copy of the modified vehicle order and scan it here.

I have no idea how the car was stolen (obviously).

All I know is I have both keys and no car.

The car had the software update, which I thought protected it against this type of theft, wasn't aware of any separate security update, but I would have (maybe incorrectly) assumed that if a BMW main dealer did the software update they would do any other updates necessary at the same time?

The BMW 'security update' is about as useful as a chocolate teacup.

The CAS module is not encrypted, so it takes a programmer 2 minutes to re-write his software after the CAS module is upgraded by the dealer (ISTA/P).

Have a look at this video of a 2014 Range Rover - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DaXKrf3_48&

Problem is most of us have no way of verifying what dealers tell us they did. When mine went in for a service and they upgraded the software (took most of day I am told)- I went home on train that night because software upgrade went wrong and they had no clue how to fix it.

Mr BMW 325m was broken into on Sunday night they stole the steering wheel which was fully loaded with paddles etc and my lock and wheel nuts. There was no broken glass or sign of entry apart from where they've been caught on CCTV and it looks like they've had some wire down the inside of the window, does this work? Also the alarm didn't go off, can anyone explains this? A few months a go they attempted to steal my wheels and a neighbour had his brand new BMW left on flower pots, again no alarm went off! Any thoughts would be welcome

I think if you double click the remote, it disables the tilt and motions sensors in the car so when it's jacked up the alarm wont go off and if they can get into the car, once they'e in the alarm isn't going to go off.

Are both cars the latest generation of BMW's?
