All,
I tried my key on the door handle lock and turned it anticlockwise. The windows don't roll. Does it mean that my car has security update? How else could I check please? bought it from a car supermarket and the guys there dont have a clue.
The windows roll down and up using the remote.
thanks,
Trumpethead
Could you contact BMW customer services and give them the VIN number? The update would have had to be done by them.I tried my key on the door handle lock and turned it anticlockwise. Or ask the last BMW garage that serviced it if they know?
That would however mean that anybody could ask, including potential thieves, so I'm not sure.

BMW service depts have a clever gizmo where you put the key in and it tells them loads of details about the key, including the VIN. If you have the key, they should tell you the answer to your question. If you also take in the V5C, they should be absolutely no problems getting the info.Or ask the last BMW garage that serviced it if they know?

Ask them to print off all the updates, etc. as they may say it hasn't been done so they could get some money for nothing (but this is getting into tinfoil hat territory).
A friend has just purchased a 2005 E60; I'm assuming this is probably vulnerable so do we check for the security update by the key in the door lock, turning and seeing if the windows drop?
Also, any recommendations about the best after-market alarm to fit to it to help prevent its theft?
Edit to add; I saw the car this afternoon and its a pre-keyless go type with a good old fashioned diamond E39 type key.

Bully and trumpet, hope your stickers arrived and are to your liking?
When i had my X5 which i bought from a Honda main dealer i took it straight to my local BMW dealer which was stratstone derby, a quick check at the service desk on the key reader informed them and me the update had not been carried out, they duly booked it in for the folloing week, advised it was a 3 hour job to download and was completely free of charge, they also carried out a vehicle health check and even washed, leathered and vac'd it out
I'm lead to believe their key readers tell them rather a lot, usual stuff like mileage, service due, fuel in tank, to stuff you wouldn't think would be recorded like how many times you turned the traction off, how many time DSC had kicked in, max revs etc etc, it can even tell your shoe size from the pedal

Just so that you're not being misinformed, the new models ie F* series are also vulnerable to keyless theft.Software to reprogram keys for these models has been in circulation for months now...
New Audis,Range Rovers,Jaguars,Focus RS and all bmw models are high risk vehicles at the moment.
I was under the impression F series cars were not affected. Do you have any further info? New Audis,Range Rovers,Jaguars,Focus RS and all bmw models are high risk vehicles at the moment.

Yup,they are just as vulnerable as any E9* series.Stolen by exactly the same key reprogramming devices that are freely available.I would suggest that at the moment,no marque is impervious to this type of attack...

Using additional security devices and blanking the OBD port to a less accessible plated using the stickers etc seem to be helping. But with these very valuable cars the criminals will take risks and clearly few cars with actually not at risk. In time there may be a solution

I think that is the reality of the real consequences of current EU requirements on motor manufacturers. Some particularly regarded cars such as BMW's particularly the higher spec cars therein are undoubtedly at risk of theft by professional crooks operating in numbers well aware of the risks and the returns make it worth it. There does not seem to be an easy resolution in view.

I agree and believe a mixture of using secondary, independent electronic devices as well as a return to basics, such as mechanical devices is the way forward.Using additional security devices and blanking the OBD port to a less accessible plated using the stickers etc seem to be helping. The 'skill' of stealing cars in the old sense of the word, has all but gone. This is/has now been replaced by either burglars or the hire/purchase of key coding devices, which once learned, takes no real skill other than to work as part of a team and occasionally update your software!

If it helps anyone then the price to block a lost key was quoted as £60 as you rightly said. The local independent quoted £50.
If I need a duplicate key the £140 upon producing V5 , and two identity proofs.
It would mean the windows won't roll down from the fob after update. Hope he knows his stuff. What do other experts here say?
Is there anyone with 2011 onwards model who can verify if there car windows doesn't roll down using unlock Kenyon fob please.

I had been to local dealer and he said if the windows roll down when u press a ndtv.com hold the unlock key it means update is not done. Couldn't argue with him that the manual key turned anticlockwise doesn't roll down a s I wasn't sure if that means the update is done. So have scheduled early next week for free update while I wait there when it's done.

Remove the metal key from your key fob and place it in the door lock, turn and hold it on the stops for a few seconds. If your windows drop then you DO NOT have the security update. If the windows do not drop then you DO have the security update installed.
The windows will STILL drop via the key fob both before and after the security update. This feature is not altered at all by the update.
The update is partially designed to stop someone from ramming a screwdriver into your door lock and forcing your windows to drop.
This also highlights that your source is talking absolute garbage.
Thanks t8cmf, that's what I thought but couldn't argue with him. I will see what he does this week. If they try try to get some money out of me citing some other update, I'll just ask for security update which he said is free of cost and come back.
Will update here. Like someone suggested I'll ask them to print off all status before update.

Scumbags tried to steal my e60 m5 last night
Door lacked mashed and all windows open. Alarm went off and they ran
Thing is does the OBD hack work even with an old fashioned key (mine has old style ignition key?)
Were they just sstupid?!
Which style of key do you mean? I thought all e60's had the square fob that is slotted in to a hole then a starter button? If this is the case it is most definitely vulnerable as thats what mine had!Door lacked mashed and all windows open. Alarm went off and they ran
