Post LCI E60 have the new key for sure , can't recall on my pre LCI what key they had confused
Pre-LCI E60 was "diamond" key I believe.
It wasn't an LCI change on the E60, done for the 2006 model year IIRC or thereabouts and from memory at the same time moved to CRxxxx etc chassis numbers.

Originals E60s just had a regular key as per the E46 etc

I received a phone call from a nice chap on PistonHeads who lives town next to me, 5 minutes away. He walked home and found his 335i unlocked and the ODB port cover lying in the foot well.

Sounds like they must of been scared off during the break in. Its a scary thought and the chap is looking desperately at ways to now secure his car. The point is who don't know whether they have a good copy of the key and will simply come back and drive off.

Take it straight to a garage and have the full Clifford system put in, with extra alarm and anti carjacking system. Requires a keypad pass to be entered each time you open the door, and if you don't enter it the car will start to drive, then lose power, and sound the alarm, cutting completely.

So my '08 520d got stolen off my driveway a few weeks back (NW London.)

My house was broken into and my keys were stolen so this may be slightly off-topic for this thread, but I just wanted to share my story.

I was thinking about getting another BMW but looks like I'll be better off with something else.

Doesn't matter what you get if the keys get stolen from the house again unless you take extra security steps such as the Clifford blackjax which you would have to consider a BMW anyway

It's sensible to take these extra measures, but my comment was in light of previous posts re: BMWs being a high profile target.

Reading this thread it's like we've travelled back in time twenty years to when car security was utter ste, car crime was booming as were insurance premiums.....unless you got a decent third party system your car was a sitting duck.

It would seem that is precisely what BMW seem to have created with the technology installed in these cars. Clearly the cars are currently totally at risk. As yet with no apparent solution.

Other than Clifford and the like additional security systems. Not good for a £30,000++ vehicle, is it?

Went to inquire about a 125/135 M Sport at the local dealer today.

Explained that really wanted one but was apprehensive about the "keyless theft" issue. The grin on the salesmans face when I mentioned those two words meant he knew the issue.

He then explained that last month a customers two week old 7 series was stolen from his drive in London. The replacement was stolen 11 days later from the same drive (!!)

There must be some lawsuits going on for people that have had two thefts. Think of the insurance premiums!!

I suspect that future insurance would be totally unaffordable for theft of the same cars at the same address. I think most insurance companies would decline to quote once in possession of the loss history.

Were I a BMW owner I would be trying to bring this to the mainstream media immediately. This must be rare and worthy of reporting and frankly, unless something is done, these cars are going to be uninsurable within cities.

I totally appreciate why you say this and part of me agrees. However, my renewal is due and if news of this "broke" then I suspect all affected BMWs would be rendered uninsurable and as a consequence worthless!

I wouldn't be surprised if said 7 series owner was given some sort of golden handshake by BMW to keep quiet? If i'd spent £80,000 on a car for it to be nicked twice I would be climbing the walls, it would take a very big cheque for me to keep quiet...

I'm sure the 'theft' component of your insurance policy is actually quite small. If this doubles or triples it will be no biggie. For the insurance companies whiplash, fraud and massive medical payouts must dwarf the cost a few hundred beemers being secret squirreled to Africa each month.

Really? I think the insurance companies will be quite concerned with £20-30k (or more) claims for unrecovered cars....
A few hundred Beemers per month adds up to major money, they will increase against the risk accordingly.

If that's the case why were Escort RS Turbos and the like totally uninsurable in certain postcodes? It came down to them constantly being stolen.

Exactly.

Same with bikes, in some postcodes if the bike is not stored in a locked, brick construction garage then insurance is a total no-go.

I would say the theft risk component is a major consideration for insurers...

BMW spokesman Gavin Ward said: “Obviously we don’t speak to the criminals themselves.
“But we do look into cases of theft which the police bring to our attention.
“Along with several other manufacturers we are looking at Onboard Data Ports (OBDs) in our cars.
“These are the ports which technicians plug their laptops into to diagnose any problems with the cars.

“We are looking to see if there is an issue with OBDs but at the moment the evidence is inconclusive."

Inconclusive evidence.........WTF eek

That's BMW taking the piss now mad

Last answer of a defeated cat maker. They have a real problem, a lot of cars at risk, and no answer. This will change when BMW actually find a solution.

If I were a BMW owner with a missing car I would be reinforcing this article with the reports from other owners. BMW have to see the necessity of honestly.
