Are the 2008+ X5 & X6s affected by this OBD port type theft?
Given the attempt to steal our December 2010 car last week, I'd say yes.

The BBC, the Olympics, 4,000 cars to LOCOG. You tell me why the independent BBC isn't giving it any attention .... [I have written to Watchdog BTW, who else has ?]

Good idea. His response here http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/askhj/answer/30836/bmw... says he is aware of reports of things being stolen from BMWs without triggering the alarm but he believes that the cars can't be driven away.

Time to set him right! It will have most effect if it comes from those who have had a car stolen or at least attempted. Otherwise it's too easily ignored as hearsay.

He won't do anything - he likes their jollies. And anyway, he'll only describe the issue in terms of " The security is not as good as on the latest Hyundai/Kia car, so go buy that instead, like he always does"

Agree with tonker. Some of the suggestions HJ gives to the questions that come in are very odd.

Arse! That puts the potential new purchase as a bad idea!

If it was myself in this situation i would invest in a stealth kill switch (circa £30 quid installed) and the thieving scum will be seriously scuppered.

I received a call from BMW head office yesterday regarding my recent dealer experience on a new car. Told them I was ready to make the purchase but to the recent thefts and publicity regarding the OBD port I had decided to purchase an alternative make of car. I'm sure they won't care that much but hopefully if enough people make a statement that they are purchasing alternative makes they might sit up and take notice.

Good. About time.

BMW are responsible for the weak security in these very expensive cars. BMW must admit the problem and correct it. At their cost. Obviously the thieves are the real villains, but society in the UK prefers not to stop them. Pity. I hope this is sorted out finally, ASAP.

I have also just noticed that Steve Fowler the Mags editor has used his column on this very subject with a title " car thieves killed the hot hatch once, can it happen again?"

I wonder if Pistonheads will actually report it now frown

Or are they still worried more about there relationship with BMW than the members of this forum....without which they wouldn't have had anything to sell to the Haymarket Group

I am not sure BMW are responsible for the security flaw, you could argue that the thieves would find a way somehow

They are definitely culpable for not doing anything about it
