What's the best way of preventing, I take it removing the OBD port is a must? Then how do BMW go about diagnosing any faults the car may develop? Refit the OBD port? I'm not clued up about cars and the mechanics, just want to know what gets stolen and how to avoid it, if the cars one to get stolen.

Why can you not just put an inline (toggle) switch on the power/gnd of the port, and put switch up somewhere private..

Right so when viewing a 56 plate E60 from 0 feedback EBay seller, what shall we check to make sure it isn't a ringer or anything of the like? Basic viewing of the car it was mint, the price of it was normal not cheap at all, but the spec is bang on what we want.

30? Thats shocking. Do you have a source for this that isnt the Daily Mail? I dont doubt it happened but 30 trucks isnt a small operation! One or two I can believe but 30 is remarkable!

Check the VIN number matches the V5 would be the first...meet them at the registered address etc. Check the engine block number too. Ring BMW and check the service history they have matches what's in the stamped book. My E60 was cloned a few years ago....the police found it before the cloned car was sold. I had to take my car to the Met's Stolen Vehicles Unit so they could check it out (luckily 5 mins from where I live)...I didn't see the car but they told me that very few thieves do anything other than change the reg plate.

I've seen a cloned car and it was very convincing, VIN plates done to a very high standard to the point they were indistinguishable from the genuine article.

What do the BiB do with these when they find them - if they cant be identified?

I mean what do they do with the cars they find and cant identify as they have been disguised, altered or changed? Crush them - surely not?

If the cloners have done a "good job" then it may be impossible to find out what the original car was so I guess it may have to be scrapped as you can't have 2 identical cars out there

Possibly, I'm not a BiB so don't know what they do with them when they find one, I was just commenting on the fact that a good clone is hard to spot by the vast majority of people.

A well matched car would be almost impossible IMO. I have seen clones in the hands of the Police which I doubt anyone other than a genuine marque specialist could detect. Certainly not without very detailed examination.

Because of the spec on the I'm going to get is pretty unique, I'm going to check the factory build spec using the vin, that should identify If it's the correct car, as well other basic checks.
