It isn't speculation. BMW's are the ONLY premium cars being stolen without keys right now.
So this year there has been not a single theft without keys of any vehicle not made by BMW?

Yea, sure.

Hi 2.5pi,

Its not head in sand tactics for me though, I've got a Z4 with the 296 alloys that apparantly all crack and have had none damaged at all, and my sat nav is fine too. I've had none of the problems that people associate with all the online stories. Maybe i'm lucky, but i'm not sure what your advice is, should i just panic and sell my car, or should i just go on enjoying it like i always have done?

I'm glad you haven't had yours stolen yet and have everything crossed for you, same as i have them crossed for everyone else!

Care to provide evidence to the contrary then?

As the person who started this forum i am a little disapointed
At some of the negative comments going back and forth between
Certain posters. I started this forum after my 6 month old 330 convertable
Was stolen and i couldnt figure out how the thieves took it
Without the keys. We all now know how they are getting stolen its
With a device that lets them copy a key in less than a minute using
The obd port.
If the thieves could steal other cars this way they would, i replaced
My bmw with a £60k jjag, and guess what, 4 months later its still
In my drive. The focus of this forum should be on making sure
Other bmw drivers dont wake up with thier pride and joy stolen
By these little sh#ts.

A agree entirely.

Quite how this is achieved with BMW steadfastly refusing to react or discuss the problem I do not know.

My suggestion would be a concerted effort by the owners of the stolen cars to get this onto the mainstream media. Apparently, not an easy task.

My neignbours 1 series was taken in the same way 4 weeks before my M3 apparently so they will go for a 1er. I wouldn't say don't buy one but I would as a minimum secure the OBD port and consider a secondary alarm and/or immobiliser.
How will the scummers know you have done this? They will need to smash your window to find out. I dont have a BMW but if I did I would go for a visual deterent like this. Has one of these years ago when car keys were sheet.

Prospective owner here, would it not be possible to have the factory fitted alarm immobiliser disarmed and have a high end system retro fitted?

Yes that is an option albeit at extra personal cost to the owner. But the question remains why should we have to be doing this with a high end car.

I was led to this thread through a link and thought it worth a mention.
The story goes my sister and her husband bought a 335d M sport and set about reading up on it after purchase.
She was alarmed to find how prevalent this is.
Anyway with this in mind I fitted 2 micro switches into the wiring up to the obd port and hidden about the cabin, one on the power supply to the port and one more for good measure on a(remaining secret)terminal that all scantools/interfaces need.
This kills any attempt to communicate with the vehicle by any means and can be left in the off position until needed, cost about a fiver from Maplins and twenty mins work.

3 nights ago the inevitable happened, returning from work she finds the o/s glass smashed and the obd port cover removed.
Importantly the car was still there.
It may not stop your car getting stolen by other methods but its a damn site more than bmw are doing apparently.

Another one has gone , ex's 56 plate 535d sport saloon black with black leather 19" (car of choice for latvian mob boss!), stolen last night from drive way in Marston Green in the West Midlands v.close to some badlands, some glass on floor, but no alarm heard. I'd mentioned this issue to her but too late gone.....forget the all the guff about jammers and people waiting around etc. this is a compromise on the ODB port & key identification system, see the youtube link. break wires to socket and fit micro-switch(s) hidden in car plus visual deterrent to avoid paying for glass.

Any guesses on likely insurance payout for this vehicle 60k miles fbmwsh, good spec etc etc. and an alternative replacement... im thinking e270/350cdi estate or audi avant, certainly not bmw after this farce and no admission of culpability, insurance co's with BMW e60's on the books might as well mark them up as an immediate payout.

From ny experience you will get screwed on your insurance payout if you dont have GAP insurance. I paid £33k for a six month old 330 im sport convertable, it only had 1,000 miles on the clock and was fully loaded so it was a bargain.
a few months later it was stolen and the insurance only offered me £25k. so without the GAP I would have lost £8,000 in less than 4 months. this was back in Febuary, and i know that second hand prices have fallen quite a bit since then due to the volume of thefts.

To some people the immediate saving of a couple of hundred pounds is more important than a potential saving of thousands in the future.

I would not buy any car without a 3yr return to invoice gap.

No matter. This is a serious thread about the on-doard biagnostic port.
