evening all what should compression test results be for a healthy 328? after 3 or 4 revolutions, a few seconds cranking, each cylinder is showing about 165 psi/11.4 bar. manual says minimum 10-11 there is no variation between cylinders - i was hoping to find something to suggest head gasket failure as its loosing water. any ideas? thanks rob

Not usual to hope for a HGF. If the pressures all match, there could still be a HGF depending where it's gone. Another test would be to get an MOT station to test for exhaust emsions being picked up at the header tank (as well as checking for signs of water in the oil or visa versa. Are you 100% certain it's not a leak, or perhaps a weak header tank cap? So hard tp check with the wet weather lately, but if you have a dry garage to let it run for a while (over some newpaper if it helps) to spot if the is a leak you've missed.

Oh...maybe not just a slight leaks then. I guess you might be right, if you're handy with the spanners taking a head off it's too difficult to investigate. If you're paying someone else to do it then it's more of an expensive gamble I suppose.
I hadn't heard of the BMW water pump impellor issue until I bought my Z3 3.0i recently, but it was one of the receipts in the history showing it had recently been done. I might have been a bit more paranoid about buying one if I'd known, but it's a great car, glad I wasn't put off.

Most decent garages have a head gasket tester that connects to the header tank. It uses a fluid which changes colour if the head gasket is leaking, it only takes a few minutes to do and cuts out all the guesswork.

If probably has been, it should last for another 50,000 miles at least though as they didn't tend to fall apart immediately when the cars were new. Might ring the garage to check as it's a local car and a local garage did the work. They may tell me to f off though as I didn't own the car at the time or pay the bill obviously.
