Hi, some pesky kids broke my girlfriends rear screen on her convertible Z4 last night. BMw say it needs a whole new roof at £2000 plus!!
Does anyone know if the glass can be replaced without replacing the whole roof? It's a 2003 model.
Thanks in advance

IIRC the glass comes as a complete article with the outer layer of the roof, and can't be bought seperately.

Even if it could be bought seperately, it is thermally fixed to the fabric, so can't be replaced with "normal" glass bonding techniques.

The glass is not available separately from BMW.

Insurance claim for a broke rear windscreen, glass excess only, surely...?

Insurance company are saying it's not a glass claim (even though this is the only part thats broken!) and she has to pay £600 excess, lose 3 years NCB and get hit with higher premiums next year no doubt!
Any lawyers in the house on how to argue this as it's clearly broken glass which should be a glass claim, it's not our fault if BMW don't sell the glass seperatly!

It's not the insurance company's fault how the car is manufactured so taking them to court sounds like a bit of a waste of time IMO. Last year some kind soul reversed into my Alpina leaving a dent in the door and wing. No witnesses so I had to pay out my excess to get the job done on insurance. These things happen, it's crap, but you just have to pay up sometimes.

If it's £2000 for the part alone plus the cost of fitting then you're probably not far from the insurance company declaring the car a financial write off if you want to push them through the courts!

I'm a lawyer and a fellow Z4 (coupe) owner but I'm afraid you're unlikely to get anywhere with this one. If the rear screen is an integral part of the roof then it's the roof that needs to be replaced and that's what your claim has to be for. I would expect this to be covered in your policy t&cs but it's not the location of the damage that matters but what needs to be repaired or replaced as a result. Sorry!

One of our glass suppliers lists the heated rear screen for the 2009 on convertible as a separate item and has one in stock. Cost is reasonable but having never looked at the installation, I have no idea what is involved with the replacement.
Unfortunately the rear screen for the model up to 2009 is not listed, so there doesn't seem to be an easy solution.

The 2009< version has the folding metal roof. It's a bit of a faf to replace but nothing too bad.

The fabric version on the <2009 is made by the same people who do the Audi A4 cab, Audi TT cab, BMW MINI cab etc. where the whole outer skin needs to be replaced.

After 4 / 6 months of non use, with the warmer weather I put the roof down! Well I tried to! The hood / roof went 90% down but not the last bit.... After a few more goes with a better charged battery I gave it a bit of assistance!
CRACK - one broken rear window.
A few phone calls to "Auto Glass" / Glass replacement co I was informed that it is a new roof job at about 1,100 pounds (2016)
After phoning a few other "Soft Top" / Hood specialists, I found ONE prepared to remove the hood, cut out the bonding of the old window AND sow in / fit a plastic replacement for 300 pounds.

YOU should be able to find others that MAY be prepared to do the same BUT as this guy said - if your roof is worn or _ 8 years old it could be rather worn and so not worth doing.
One of the things he said was that if the frame twisted, that could cause the roof to fail and break the glass. Is there any knowledge here?
I am thinking tha last thing I want is to spend 1,100 pounds to have the glass break again any time soon because of "sticking frame" or other problems.
