My Z4 engine would use about 2l tops between 15k services.

Then at 91k miles I had my last service, and INSP1.

Then when 3k miles after the service popped up it was time to start topping it up again.

I bought the Castrol Edge 5W30 as usual, but it seemed really thin (level in the container was like looking at water). It also said 'new formula' on the container.

Anyway I put it in, and it seemed to get through that oil pretty sharp ish.

Then I bought another one, and now I've used all that one up too.

So I've done about 8k now and used the initial BMW oil, and two litres of 'new' Edge.

I'd say consumption has nearly doubled and the only thing I can say has changed so suddenly is having had the service and also this new formula oil... which as said looked terribly thin when sloshing it in the container and also pouring it into the car.
I'm also sure my mpg has improved a bit, maybe 2mpg, so not sure if that is the cost of a thinner oil?!

Has anyone else noticed increased oil consumption with the 'new formula' Edge oil?

Thanks

Dave

No still on the old stuff, mine use about one litre every 3k or so. I read somewhere there is a castrol edge sport, (i think could be wrong) that eliminates M54B30 oil consumption

It's never going to eliminate oil consumption.

The only way to eliminate M54B30 oil consumption is to not turn the engine on hehe

If you've only needed to top up 3 times in 8000 miles I'd thank your lucky stars.

I know it's still relatively low consumption, and if the slightly higher mpg is real then it pays for the difference any way hehe.

Just a bit annoying. I'm gonna try find an old Edge in the big container to keep for topping up my 1l bottle, the 1l ones are a ripoff biggrin

It was a different viscosity, I was going to try it but didn't know wether it would do any good or any damage, better the devil you know and all that, I'm sure it was on here, way before I was a member.

Looks like the Edge Sport might be worth a try then!

Might do a full flush/refill when the oil light starts coming on again. It might do it good to have a good flush out now it's almost on 100k miles!

Thanks

I think they might have re named it EDGE 0w-40 now. It isnt as good as the 5w-30 (meets lower manufacturer specs) but its still LL04

Bit of an update on this.

About 6 weeks ago I bought a 1l top-up of Mobil 1 5W30 and that seems to have gone in 6 weeks/1500miles.

I think the lower it gets the faster it burns it off, as if you keep it brimmed right at the top it doesn't seem to get through it as fast...

Not really sure it's hard to get a good reading of the level on these cars such is the settle time/thermal expansion etc...

Any way, I've bought a 5l from Halfords for £40 which seems great value for top-ups or a full service, the Castrol stuff is £4l for £45!

Oil service is due in 5k mile so will see how long this latest 1l of top-up lasts and report back.

Generally though my mpg is quite a bit better these days, a combo of the new Asymmetric and these thinner but more burny oils?

Man maths still says it's cheaper to buy expensive tyres + oil more often as the fuel costs are king even at only 2mpg improvement!

Cheers

Dave

Also goes for the petrol gauge with an M54B30, at least in my experience!

1 litre of oil every 600 miles is acceptable according to BMW.

The problem stems from the cars being driven too cautiously during their running in periods when new, apparently.

People used the old method of never exceeding 3000 rpm for the first few thousand miles of driving which resulted in glazing of the cylinder bores.

I believe the owners manuals actually advised that the cars should be driven right throughout the rev range, but should not be red-lined. Unfortunately, too many owners thought they knew better than BMW's engineers!

When there's a discount off on oil only though surely?

I've not seen oil offers as much as others.

Yes, it's normally £38 odd, but for the last 8 weeks or so they've been doing 30% off if you use discount code OILSPILL30.

Cheers for the replies!

That is pretty cheap for the Castrol and Vauxhall/GM oil at the appropriate retailers biggrin

I guess while oil is so relatively cheap and the fuel so expensive it makes sense to pay for oil that makes your mpg higher biggrin

Just a pain having to keep topping it up biggrin

Cheers
