ECP turbos are garret usually, and although sold as exchange, you can ask to verify, but they are actually new, though you'll pay a surcharge still if you fail to return the old one.

Very bad news. Same thing just happened on my wife's 2.0 X3 but fortunately it is under extended warranty. The dealer told me it would have cost over £3k had we had to pay for it. It makes these cheap older cars not look like a good buy should this happen.
I hope u get it sorted at a Indy for much less.

My dad had one go on a Passat tdi at 120k about 3 years ago. VW stealer wanted £ 3k to replace the turbo, intercooler, exhaust. I went to Turbotechnics in Northampton, got a garret ( same as OE) for about £ 600 and spent £ 350 getting it all fitted. We cleaned out the intercooler with a hosepipe, same with the cat and exhaust which was full of oil ( needed large tin of jizer for that). The car has now done 220k with no further problems despite having been chipped and driven since by my nutter brother.Folk buy turbo diesels because they are supposed to be cheap to run, they are not when you factor in blown turbo's at £3k a pop.Unfortunately modern tdi's are pretty highly strung beasts and there are lots of things to fail.

ECP do Garret turbo's for less than new BMW
I would flush the engine oil before you renew it, renew the breather valve, you'll have to renew engine oil & air filters anyway to keep the warranty, and in future change the oil every 10k not the ridiculous 20k the CBS suggests.
You'll be well advised to renew any oil feed or return pipes which will have been blocked possibly 80k is about right? You must be kidding me. My 2007 BMW 120d (chipped to 204bhp) has now 148k on clock, no turbo problems at all. Only thing I do - change oil every 10 - 12k, never wait for that stupid service interval Previously I had Seat Ibiza 1.4 TDi - sold it with 132k on clock, same story - no turbo problems?

As modern diesel engines become more and more complex with manufacturers chasing economy gains above all else, these engines will only become more costly to maintain, and more prone to failure if they are not. It's something of a paradox that often small economy gains for the buyer of the new car are being traded for higher maintenance costs for the 2nd or 3rd owners.

It's a pity that NinjaPower did not come back with the result of this one. It's eight months since the thread started so it must be solved by now. I suspected a split pipe or blown joint based on his original description and somebody else posted the same opinion.

I suspected a split pipe or blown joint based on his original description and somebody else posted the same opinion. I had a very similar issue with my 520d last month. Basically turbo went while we were on a weekend away for a mate's wedding - had the whiny siren noise when accelerator was down. AA recovered to my bmw garage. warranty company covered the turbo, but bmw and warranty company couldn't make the full fix work under warranty. Took it to a local independent BMW expert and he sorted it all out under the warranty cap. This guy was really good - used to be bmw employee now is set up independently and is a master technician. Not sure how much the actual turbo cost was but he did a turbo replacement, engine oil service, pipes replacement (not sure which but bmw insisted this was done) and associated cleaning of adjoining parts all for about 1150. BMW were coming to at least 2000.

Regarding BMW goodwill, I had a turbo failure 6yr old 51000mile 320d FBMWSH. Took it to the dealer for diagnosis and immediately (politely) asked them to request a goodwill payment from BMW UK. BMW UK agreed to pay parts (£720) I paid labour (£190). If you don't ask you dont get.

Our 320d had the same symptopms - lack of boost and a loud whine. The turbo was completely, totally and utterly shagged. Loads of play in the shaft, bent vanes etc - the usual story.

no smoke just lots of noise and no boost, pretty easy to check aswell.
Hope its a cheap fix for you.

Hi there!
Sorry I didn't come back sooner.
The result was a knackered turbo. Completely ruined, massive play in the shaft. Just 'usual wear and tear' apparently...
There was then a price matching war between the local indie and the local BMW dealer who has been very short of work recently, and the BMW dealer finally won with a price of £1200 to replace the turbo and do a 'free full service' on the car at the same time.
Pretty costly and really disappointing if I'm honest. I don't expect bills like that on a well looked after, fully serviced, 80k BMW.

Mine went two weeks ago ,120d auto FBMWSH 5 years old 90K.Trailored from birmingham to London. With the air breather which was the first diagnostic fault followed by the Turbo showing as seized £2200 and with a full sevice final bill £2400 my local all car indie only made £350 on labour,BMW parts.
These guys have a very good local rep and were adament if I had had 6000 mile oil changes it would not have happened.
BMW UK were not interested.

Why is it affecting BMWs on long service intervals. But not so much turbo diesel Vauxhalls on 20,000 mile intervals?
Or is that just perception on my part?

Like the engine, the turbo is an off the shelf item fitted to non BMW cars, so you could save some money if you fancy doing the homework. Skipping the filter change ( not the oil filter) mentioned earlier, usually results in a turbo failure.
