Wow ecotune¡K..
Well just had a lovely visit to ecotune.
Was booked in for Saturday for dpf removal and remap, but was at a loose end yesterday so phoned stan at about 10 and asked if there was any chance he could squeeze me in. He got back to me and said he has managed to get me a slot at 3pm. ļ
So I immediately set off on the 100 mile journey and got there with 30 mins to spare so we managed to get car for dyno run before car was away to get downpipe fitted.
Sam and I were happy as it made what it was supposed to and seemed a very healthy engine.
Car got taken away by sam to his local trusted bmw specialist to get downpipe fitted and DPF removed as he had no space/time to do it at one of his workshops.
Meanwhile I was made to feel at home in his new central heated, sound proofed lounge area. Coffee and sweets on tap along with a fridge to help yourself to bottled water or cans of pop.
Even offered me a burger king which I foolishly refused as I sat the next HOUR watching him eat it.
It was a couple of hours wait but had a 42¡¨ tv on wall and remote in my hands all was well but Stan was more than happy to chat about cars and share his knowledge.
Car returned sounding a lot more throaty and nice turbo spool a lot more vocal.
Stan copied ecu file and started going through it on laptop and tweaking it all to a safe level and customising it all to suit.
Decided on the hand held unit so can change between 2 maps. As I am sharing car with missus so no need on it to be at its peak safe map through week.
So after he changed everything he wanted to we plugged it into port on car and uploaded the ecotune first, very simple to do and pretty fail safe took all of a few minutes. That map made 294bhp atw so all was good!
Then he uploaded the maxitune and he dyno¡¦d that which made 314bhp atw. So very impressed with figures.
So it was test drive time¡K
Sadly it damp to say the least but Stan gave it WOT a few times to make sure everything was ok and my god does it shift, its ridiculous. And sounds soo much better almost like a petrol variant, certainly from inside the cabin.
If you have any doubts or queries then I would suggest giving eco tune a call yourself am sure your needs will be filled!

Thanks Stan

Ive just bought one apart from the wheels(Mines standard) it looks identical to yours.
Its got an Evolve switchbox, but hasnt had the DPF removed. Still it certainly makes a difference from standard.
Good cars, but I cant help think it would be better with a manual box, or maybe remap the gearbox to change up earlier.scratchchin To me the box feels like it stays in gear too long and your figures confirm it.
I would prefer it to change up at 3600rpm or so.

Nice.

What were the standard figures? How did the at wheels figure translate to flywheel figure?

I wouldnt want it to change down much earlier tbh power is still strong all way along.
I must admit geabox is a bit lazy for my liking be nice if it was a later dct type box.

Flywheel was about 362bhp i think. It made 288 on stock run.

I'd love to have a manual box in my 335d so i agree with that point, but you don't want to change up at peak power rpm! You need to shift at a speed that results in the rev drop after the shift falling halfway down the power "triangle" below peak power. e.g. say the shift drops 1400rpm, as the power curve is pretty symetrical "triangle" above and below peak power rpm (3600rpm in the graph ^^^^^) you want to shift 7000rpm above peak power (4300rpm) so that after the shift you are at 2800rpm. This maximises the area under the triangle and hence performance (and also shows why more gears are better ;-)

What is the max torque figure afer you had the adjustments done, if youre pushing out 516ftlb you are just on the limit of that ZF gearbox, which is rated at or around 700Nm. Anything over that and you will be in no-mans land and may see problems with the gearbox.

This has been mentioned a few times, am sure stan said he has limited the torque to 730nm in the map?!

With the few people mentioning that i am at (or even over) the torque limits of the gearbox where is the proof? not being trying to be clever but i searched and couldnt find any failed gearboxes and hundreds running over 700nm?

People run this power in x5's using same box and that weighs 800kg more and in stans instance (same map as me) he tows a 2.5 ton boat too and gearbox doesnt flinch when floored....

Dont get me wrong it is a concern but if its limits are around 700nm then that would mean thats its safe limits and has been tested under constant strain for hours on end in a test facility somewhere. Where as i will only put it under those strains occaisonally.

Wouldn't worry too much about the torque figure as I know of a few cars that ran well over that for many thousands of miles. Mine ran 560lb/ft at one point, so as long as you aren't launching like a mad man at every opportunity I think it will be fine. The reality is though that a remap will almost certainly accelerate wear and tear on numerous mechanical parts, but depending on how long the life span of the parts are you may never experience a catastrophic failure in your ownership...

The 335D/535D have been around long enough now with many having had remaps, so if there were any mechanical issues then these would be known and easily accessible through forum searches.

Jules.

Only puffs out noticeable smoke when booted after alot of tootling about. After the initial clear out its seems very clear.

Thanks that is how i was understanding it all. Like you say some cars have been mapped for 5+ years but still havent read a failure?? lets not tempt fate though frown

I had my 123d done by Ecotune. They offer a service where they send out a device that allows you to map the car yourself and email through the maps. I fit the DPF pipe myself and loaded the map on, the difference was incredible. The car sounded exactly the same below 2800rpm, but once I was on the big turbo it sounded as close to a petrol as you could get.

I never fully got to test the performance difference for various reasons and the car looks like it will be sold now (returned to standard) but to give an idea of the performance difference... An 08 Golf R32 with a miltek had a play with me once. He had a run on me and from 40-120 I left it for dead (cancelled his advantage and pulled about 5car lengths) this was in a 2.0diesel... Ecotune claim it should have ~275hp from the maxitune map smile

I take it your getting round to updating your readers cars thread? smile

I think I need to get used to it, but I dont feel as though its doing what I would want it to do. It feels as though its wasting performance.
That said its a great effortless car to drive quickly.
