Thanks. - I do take the car out at the weekends. Though usually it's only 2x 30-minute drives on country roads, I do use the full rev range once it's warmed-up. Is that enough?

If the mayo is disappearing, or is only minimal, then yeah it sounds like it'll be enough.

My mam's Z4 would sometimes literally do nothing bu 4 - 5 mile runs for weeks on end...

Tonight, I cleaned-up as much of the "mayo" as possible with paper towels, topped-up with Castrol Edge 0w 30, then went for a blast for an hour or so...enough of a blast to trouble the DSC and remind me that despite only being the 170BHP 2.2 version, it's a brilliant drive. - Hopefully, that'll sort it. I love this car. biggrindriving

Holy thread Resurrection Batman!

I changed my E39 530i's oil at the weekend (with Texaco Havoline Ultra - it was LL01 compatible) and to my horror the mayo I experienced long ago when the thermostat failed is back! (Thermostat was replaced 10 months/14000 miles ago, and I hadn't had a mayo problem since). The mayo is only very slight, and only on the oil cap not the dipstick. I'll do the check on the hidden menu for actual engine temperature on the way home (my commute is 15 miles each way).

Could this simply be - new oil takes a little longer to get to temperature than the old, coupled with cold weather, coupled with slightly relaxed commute causing the mayo and it may settle down? Are certain oils renowned for this?

Yes.

I have a 330ci and have a couple of times noticed touch of mayo on the filler cap, only really in cold weather, and always cleared itself with a big of time and or a single long drive (like 3-4hours motorway) at which point I have continued monitor it but have rightly or wrongly tried not to loose sleep over it.

Can you upload a photo so we can gauge it?
Does the temp gauge come up to vertical nice and quickly?
New oil shouldn't make any difference.

Yeah hopefully a longer run will clear it - it's really not a lot, perhaps co-incidental with the oil change rather than directly related - I'll get a pic later.

Temp gauge takes a couple of miles to get to 12 o'clock, but like I say the hidden OBC readout showed a steady 95 degrees as the running temp.

These engines get less mayo with a new gen BMW thermostat and new crankcase breather and pipe work. (You can even go for the cold climate kit).

Yes I've heard that too - what puzzled me is that from the same runs with no mayo (even in the recent cold weather), I've suddenly got mayo, and the only thing that has changed is the oil brand.

Although maybe it does just want a new breather and associated pipework.
