2012 X5 30d M Sport - £40k - good buy? Any thoughts?
Discussion
Hi
Considering a return to the BMW fold and been offered the above 8,000 mile car by BMW main dealer on a 12 plate in metallic grey with decent spec (7 seat option, 20" alloys, media pack etc), 5 years free servicing.
I just wondered if anyone has any thoughts or first hand experience of the current X5 particularly re general usability, reliability, build quality, performance, fuel economy etc?
I was looking at the MB E350 Sport estate but the wife fancied another 4x4 so the X5 came into the frame, not looked at for a while but are they getting a bit dated now?
Any feedback appreciated.

I've got one which I bought new in 2007 and still have....brilliant family car. Longest I have ever owned a car by some margin. It's definitely the best drivers car of it's kind....although haven't driven the Porsche.
Mine has been totally relaible in that time. 7 seat option is great but not really useful until kids are 3 or 4 on a booster cushion....not big enough for an adult.
The fuel economy isn't great but I have the SD or what is now the 4.0d and mine only has a 6 speed box. I would think a 3.od with the 8 speed would get comfortably over 30mpg on a run and mid low 20's in town.
Has the one you are looking at got Comfort Seats ? I ticked a lot of options boxes on mine. They're brilliant.

Thanks, it is due to arrive at Bowker BMW Preston (basic details on their website but no photo or registration yet) shortly and is an ex BMW car - I had imagined that meant it was an ex-demo and/or managers car and I would hope it would look like new. Is that benig overly optimistic?

It should be in very good condition. Could well be a BMW management car. Could be a car that was used during the Olympics...I think they has YS reg's or something similar from memory.I'll tell you my experience (I'll try and keep it brief) when buying our current X5 from Bowker Preston.
I agreed a price with the salesman, drove 200mls to Preston to exchange a X3 for the X5 plus £20k and was presented with an invoice of £21odd. The trade-in value of the X3 was £12k which didn't move but the ticket price discount disappeared. They weren't interested in what I had to say, it was a case of pay or go. I paid.
I had the same conversation with the Manager the next day to complain about it all, waste of time really.
I hate salesman and dealers.

We got out 2012 (30d M Sport) X5 in June, it had 36 miles on the clock, we traded our 1 coupe in for it and if you look at the trade in price and the price we paid it worked out we paid about £44k for the car. It was at a sale event one weekend and they did us a good deal as we were existing customers, although I'm sure anyone could've got the deal if they had pushed them as much as we did.
The car is has lots of options including the 20"s and the media pack, I really like driving the car and it's great for long journeys. All in all we are really pleased with it and I think we paid a good price for it so both very happy.
One thing to look out for is the rear bumper, some of them have warped, I noticed ours and took it back and got a new one put on under warranty.
