I'm going to put these wheel/tyres up for sale if anyone wants them. Looking to swop the X5 over the summer for something else.

OEM 19" BMW winters, conti M+S tyres, all like new no scratches or marks.

No problem, did you sell the X3 winters yet ?

I was driving around last Friday, traction was okay but stopping wasn't so good. I let the pressure out 7psi to 25psi and that improved things. The real problem down here is everyone else, Reading was gridlocked in the afternoon. The tradesman doing some work for me took 4hrs to get home (normally 30mins).

X3 winters haven't gone yet - was going to put them on eBay until I noticed you are forced to accept PayPal as a payment method. If anyone with an X3 wants a good set of winters give me a shout!

The X5 really has been phenomenal, I will have to take some pics before the snow melts. Our 'driveway' is a farm track which is inclined and now covered in compressed and frozen snow. I tried to get the F20 out this morning (after having to use the X5 to drag it uphill through a snowdrift on Friday evening) and it was completely stuck before I even got to my own gate. It's now wearing its own set of winters my local dealer fortunately had in stock this afternoon :-) the difference is remarkable.

Taking my car out to the Alps next weekend so bought some winter tyres and had them fitted at the weekend. Massive improvement in braking distance in the wet.....has one of the amber traffic light moments yesterday where it's debatable whether to stop or go. Pulled up and really noticed the improved stopping distance.

I bought mine from BMW as the dealer stores them for free (£30 to change the wheels over). Mine are 18's which cost £2000....well they actually ended up costing me £1650. I e-mailed the dealer on Thursday to confirm my wheels had arrived (ordered from Germany).....got a phone call on Friday "your tyres were fitted to a car (assume a demonstrator) by mistake yesterday and have 20 miles on them". Useless tts! Still that improves the man maths after the discount I negotitated.....new tyres are circa £1000 for the X5 which means the alloy's have cost me £650 which I think I'll get back £250 on three or four years time. Worth every penny.

I'm looking to get some winter rims and tyres for an '08 X5 3.0 SD

It currently runs on 20" rims but it seems like 18 or 19" are preferable? When you get 18 or 19" are they also automatically narrower at the rear? In this instance how do you maintain the appearance of the wider tyres?

What are the potential downsides to opting for non run flat? Can it cause any problems with the BMW monitoring system?

Cheers for any advice. Anyone looking to sell anything appropriate please drop me a line.

We have a set of Contis on 19" wheels. They cost about £2k with the car.

I ran a bmw oem set of 19s, all the same size (basically 4 fronts). Rears looked a bit crap without the staggered setup. Have seen 20" winters on staggered, looked good but expensive and wouldn't be as good as 18/19 for grip. Downside is you need a few cans of tyreweld, monitoring system works on rotation as far as I understand, nothing in the wheel like the old systems. TPS complains on the first outing but after a reset its fine.

I put my own set together which worked out great. Ebay is usually full of lightly used 19" rims where owners have traded up to larger wheels. Then buy tyres separately before the rush as they are generally only produced in small batches once a year.

I usually run a 275 / 315 set up on 20's in the summer and from memory the winters are 255 / 275 but higher profile on 19's. Pirelli snow and ice runflat tyres and couldn't be happier, they feel totally planted in all weathers and tread wear is better than the Dunlop summers.

In winter I run an OEM set of 18" symmetricals on my X5, fitted with Conti runflats. Ride is better than 19" stocks on my '07 E70 but actually worse (for some reason) than the 19s on my '11 40D. The winters are brilliant in cold weather and unstoppable (in a good way!) in snow & ice but lose precision and go for understeer as the temperature rises. They're coming up to their 3rd winter - will probably last through that, after which I"ll go for non-runflats.

Heads up to all that there is a very nicely priced OEM lightly used set on a popular auction site at the moment. I have no association with the sale and am prepared to bet they would make far more money if they sold them in 6 weeks time

I had some spacers made so that I can run narrow wheels all round.

I think a big consideration is where in the country are you based OP? How reliant are you on your car for work? i.e. can you jump on the bus on bad days?

I live up North and use the car alot for work. Lots of steep roads where I live too. Have an e46 coupe which was useless until I bought some 16" wheels with winter tyres. Transformed the car no end!!! can not recommend enough.

I would go down the ebay route for some used alloys and also buy some part-worn winter tyres. 5-6mm can be had at a good price.
This.

OP, if you live in the North then go for it but in the South East it's a waste of time, save your money.
+1

We've just put the winters on our E92 (17" BMW Winter tyre package and storage) after suffering the last few years of being stranded at the first whiff of snow.

Can't recommend them enough after the runflats, ride also dramatically improved smile Now feels like a Roller smile

@Simond S - thanks for the pics - are both pictures with the spacers or the top one is pre spacers?

In general it seems like there are split/offset rims that will give the appearance of the wider wheels.. anyone have any ideas where to to find these?

Correct.

I had mine made for me by pdv on eBay. £180 for all four delivered from Ukraine (or similar). http://pdv-wheelspacers.eu/

I took the decision to have the rear made with the inner face made to fit the X6 hub whilst the outer fits the X5 wheel. This removed the need for a spigot ring.

Rear is 60mm, front 25mm. 50 - 55mm would look a bit less aggressive on the rear. Also, if you don't have mudflaps I would run 15 and 45mm to avoid throwing stones at the car.

I use vredestein wintrac on mine, using a set of 19" wheels, huge difference when it gets cold.
Got them from an online tyre supplier and fitted by a local place for a tender a wheel.
