My 2007 vintage 1 series has just been diagnosed with a broken timing chain - 2500 miles AFTER having the software updated to 2013 version with stop/start feature.

Did others who had this problem have their cars serviced before the issue? - BMW apparently update software to latest issue as standard.

Maybe the later models have had the chain improved to cope with the higher starting duty......
I don't believe the chains are different, the issues seem to be with tensioners/sprockets which damage chains.

I don't let my stop start activate now, 15,000 miles on the replacement setup and it's not as noisy as before but it still not right. I am just waiting till I can chop it in in 6 months now.
