30mpg is probably just about do-able IMO. Not sure that cruise control is the most effective way of getting the best mpg but I'm convinced that the most economical cruising speed is about 85mph - seems to find its natural gait around that speed whereas at 70mph +/- 5mph it sort of 'labours' a little (if it's possible for a 4.8l engine to labour!).

Sounds like a great drive though. I sympathise - my 4 month old, whilst she falls asleep quickly in the car, she gets bored on long motorway journeys and we end up stopping frequently. A 250mile trip to Yorkshire can take a long time!

Get the mrs to sit in the back to entertain them when they wake. Added bonus of peace up front! hehe

Ha - yes, a good plan - but sadly front comfort seat vs rear middle seat is not exactly a fair fight....

I managed just over 31mpg in an auto 545i Touring on the autoroutes (and on whatever they call motorways in Belgium and Holland). Cruise control at about 85mph. Can't see the 550i doing much different; manual would probably be better.

Shameless plug for another one of these great cars (mine) up for sale. With no kids to ferry about to uni etc. I can go back to something less practical.

I purchased an LCI 550 Sport Step at the weekend, what a machine, a thinking mans M5 biggrin

Averaging 28 mpgs at the moment, clearly I'm not trying hard enough.

It's got so many gadgets on it, I need a month to work it all out, head buried in owners manual for a while it is then!

In 120K miles in my 550i auto estate I ONCE got more than 30mpg on the computer out of a tank. This got 400 miles from about 64L of fuel. That was crusing at a steady 75mph. Going faster, for me, did drop the economy off a bit.

So thinking you will average a real 30mpg at a85mph cruise is a little optimistic. Plan on 27-8mpg and you'll be less likely to be disappointed.

But I did love the car, the power was wonderful, and economy not bad considered. It has been replaced by an E350D Est which rides and handles better but I miss the 100bhp I'm down, and the engine not.

Good shout - I averaged 27.4mpg on the way down, half cruise control and half not. It is less than 30, but I'm still pretty pleased with that....!

I've finally made the decision to sell by beautiful 550i manual touring... so thought I'd resurrect this thread for the sole reason of blatantly advertising my car in a thread talking about how good they are!

I was all set to provide a "bump" but then saw that you had sold your steed, good news for you but better news for the buyer!

I did wonder yesterday, what with the 550i being so rare, difficult to move on, and with petrol prices ever on the rise, whether the only option I will have when I come to sell (for any sort of vaguely reasonable money) will be to p-ex mine against an F11 550i that a dealer is finding equally hard to shift. The circle would continue and in this way, I would become locked into perpetual 550i ownership. I am certainly hoping so :-)

You're on the ball... Yes, I sold the car yesterday to a chap who saw and read about the car on PH. I'm not sure how active he is on here, but he may come along to comment.

An infinite circle of 550i ownership would be a fine problem to have! If you don't do massive miles then you can get a real bargain, so long as you know it won't be any better when you come to sell it.

I'd banned myself from pistonheads until I sold it, so it's good to be back! Before selling, I'd told myself to sit tight until next year before but the temptation to think about "what next..." will almost certainly get the better of me.

Nice one CH. Still loving mine but my eye is straying towards an E55 AMG, because my fuel bills aren't quite big enough! wobble
