Apologies for resurrecting this thread, but wanted to add my experiences.

Since owning my car for the last couple of months, and 3000 miles, we've averaged about 26.5 mpg.

Max I've seen on a run is 29mpg with the cruise set at 70mpg, and we get about 500 miles from a tank ..... 80+ litre tank that is!
My first E70, a pre-LCI 30D, averaged about 29mpg before I remapped it with a Bluefin - after that, it had a lot more get up and go and the average consumption went up to about 32mpg - very pleased with that. My current 40D gets 28-32mpg without remapping, which is a little worse than I'd hoped for but not too bad for a 2 tonne ship with >300bhp.
Interesting comments on your remap. How much did that cost, and were there any downsides at all?

I get about 20mpg round town and about 38/39mpg on a run, though owning an E53 I'm sure you know this.
You get 38 mpg on a run ?!?! Really ? I've had my 2007 X5 SD for five years (bought new) and never seen anything remotely liek that.

In answer to the OP's question I have had mine for 5 years....which is 3 years more than I have owned any other car. It's a great car for shifting a family long distances or short. I just took mine out to Switzerland and back, was a really easy journey and much more relaxing in the previous cars I have done that journey in.....535d and an E46 M3 (not a shock with the latter!)
Around town i just tease the pedal with my little toes and i cannot get above 22mpg but on a run with cruise set to 65mph its way up top 30's, i'll take a pic next time i'm out
Nov 07 car here, exactly the same as above, 21-22mpg in town, i never cruise in the 60's, in the 80's you're back in the high 20's again in my experience

Luke.

Interesting to see what the diesels are getting. I've got a 4.8i and get 23mpg at 70ish. Not terrible.

I know this is an old post so apologies for bringing it back to life. I'm trying to decide what to replace my E53 3.0D with so have been researching real world MPG. I'm surprised by the low numbers here. My E53 3.0D Sport gives me an average of 32MPG around town and country lanes - If I'm on a long motorway journey in Europe using cruise control between 70-80mph I'll average 38/39mpg.

Are the figures people are quoting here US or UK MPG? If an E70 six years newer and with the same size engine as my current E53 is going to give me worse fuel consumption then I'll have to cross the X5 off my list of prospective replacements which would be a shame.

My MPG figures are much worse than yours so I don't know if it's a valid comparison, however, having moved from an E53 30d to an E70 40d I find the MPG to be much the same between the two cars. Given that the 40d is a big step forward in terms of performance from the 30d then I reckon there's a decent improvement in the E70s fuel consumption. Calculations done on the back of a fag packet but I think it's valid nevertheless.

Could some of you with pretty crap mpg be running with duff thermostats as is dead common on the e60 3.0 diesels?

Mine is crap. 2011 30d. Endless electrical problems. Transfer box issues. 31mpg though.
