Hi all. I'm looking at buying an E70 (2007/8) 3.0D X5. I can't really seem to find any unbiased owner's opinions, as you all know what Google is like, just tales of woe! The 2 I am looking at have between 80 and 86k miles, which seems about average for this year and type of vehicle. Am I getting into big bill territory!!??

I would appreciate any real life experiences, to help make up my mind.

I owned an E53 X5 a few years ago and it was faultless, drove very well, and I was in general exceptionally happy with it. Would I be equally happy with the E70??

Cheers folks.

I have one, am about to sell in another week or two. Been fairly faultless - couple of small electrical issues which were easily fixed.

75k miles, May 07. Fully loaded if interested!

I'm on my second bmw but first X5, an E70 3.0sd 08, only had it a couple of months and generally happy with it, I was a bit apprehensive on fuel consumption but took the plunge, needed a 4x4 anyway so whichever I chose it would of been much of a muchness, in my very short time driving it I get about 20mpg round town and about 38/39mpg on a run, though owning an E53 I'm sure you know this.

Steering's a bit heavy I feel but it is a big lump and don't know how it compares to other 4x4's or even X5's, other than that I can't fault it. If funds allow though try and get an 08 onwards as the tax is cheaper, down to £270 from £450, I was lucky as I found mine sat on a Honda dealers forecourt for £20950, I managed to get it for a bit less and they filled the tank as well (£120). And a years warranty too

You get 38 mpg on a run ?!?! Really ? I've had my 2007 X5 SD for five years (bought new) and never seen anything remotely liek that.

In answer to the OP's question I have had mine for 5 years....which is 3 years more than I have owned any other car. It's a great car for shifting a family long distances or short. I just took mine out to Switzerland and back, was a really easy journey and much more relaxing in the previous cars I have done that journey in.....535d and an E46 M3 (not a shock with the latter!)

Errr, no.

Our 2012 X3 30D M Sport has 8000 miles on the clock (with us from new) and tyres have 5mm or more left across the width.

Tried to upload a photo but the upload link appears to be broken!

Wife is on her second X5, had the pre and post facelift. Post facelift much better IMO. Heavy lump of a car, crash bang wallop with the run flats but she loves it. Personally I wish we had a fast estate. Average around 28- 30mpg with mixed driving. Reliability has been decent, nothing major has gone wrong with either one of them.

Around town i just tease the pedal with my little toes and i cannot get above 22mpg but on a run with cruise set to 65mph its way up top 30's, i'll take a pic next time i'm out

Got them down to 20500k but with them taxing it for me it was £270 more, was still prepared to walk away at that so they chucked in a full tank, even got a years warranty albeit a Honda approved used one

Done 22k on mine and still going strong.

Edited to say, I have a 2011 40d and the trip computer tells me my average is 30mpg

Fair play to you....can't say I ever drive anywhere at 65mph for a long time though! It definitely tapers off dramatically the faster you go....I got 26 mpg driving to Switzerland and back. According to the trip computer I averaged 60 mph for the whole 1300 miles but that the reality was I was either doing 80 to 90 mph on the autoroute's or 30 to 40 mph in the mountains.

I have to do a bit of dual carriageway driving over Easter so I am going to see what I get doing a constant 60mph for 10 miles or so.

Blimey I'd struggle to get near that with an X3 3.0d! Ours does early 30's on a run.

So I did a little experiment with the mpg.....set the cruise to 60mph and got 36 mpg over 10 miles. Did the same at "normal motorway speeds" and got 27 to 28 mpg.

I can't say driving at a constant 60mph on a dual carriageway with very light traffic is entirely typical of my motoring though.

I think we all have different definitions of 'on a run' some people seem to think it is the mpg when travelling at a constant 60 mph. My x5 3d averages about 28mpg with lots of town driving, I think that is pretty good. Anerages 30mpg if there are a few long distance runs.

Apologies for resurrecting this thread, but wanted to add my experiences.

Since owning my car for the last couple of months, and 3000 miles, we've averaged about 26.5 mpg.

Max I've seen on a run is 29mpg with the cruise set at 70mpg, and we get about 500 miles from a tank ..... 80+ litre tank that is!

My first E70, a pre-LCI 30D, averaged about 29mpg before I remapped it with a Bluefin - after that, it had a lot more get up and go and the average consumption went up to about 32mpg - very pleased with that. My current 40D gets 28-32mpg without remapping, which is a little worse than I'd hoped for but not too bad for a 2 tonne ship with >300bhp.

Interesting to here you say that the mpg went up. I've read the claims of that in the past but not seen owners actually saying that so that's got me interested.

About to set off for Switzerland tomorrow in my 3.0 SD....4 up fully laden with a roof box. I'll be lucky to see 23 mpg I reckon!

I only do 5 or 6,000 miles a year so never really been too bothered about the consumption but we're moving out of London next year so the annual mileage will more than double I reckon...might be time for a Bluefin or similar.
