Hi,

Drove a M135i and a 1M back to back yesterday, together with Mrs Cidered.

- 135i was deeply impressive. Comfortable, great cabin, nice noise, great gearbox, very quick in a straight line and with 5 doors practical as well (i need to take Kid backwards and fowards to nursery, as well as the occasional trackday!). Ugly and dull looking thing though, but I don't really mind about that so much. Missus loved it.

- 1M looked brutal in black, interior not as slick and didn't have so many toys, ride was noticably more firm, missus wouldnt drive it because she doesnt like manual, and she complained (a lot) it looked "chavvy". Did not feel as quick in a straight line and can't comment on either on twisty stuff as a test drive in somebody else's car on busy public roads isnt time or the place to find out. Is less practical, and a bit more expensive.

No contest then -1M it is!smile

Got a few hours before the full history comes through. It's a two owner car - bit strange considering the milage ~7k) - but the tyres show no evidence at all of track use nor to do they look brand new.

So - considering the BMW used warranty, the modest milage and the fact i'm going to get details of any other work it's done seems all i need to worry about. Anything else to consider? Any little idiosyncracy for a 1M that i need to be asking about? I don't think there is - but thought here is best place to ask!

Cheers,

You will enjoy it.
I have owned one for over a year now and done 10k miles in it. It can be a little noisy on the motorway at around 75mph as they are known to have an exhaust drone at certain revs but if you travel at 80 it goes away.
Gear box can be a little notchy but you get used to it. It really is a special car and one that appears to be holding its value way better than anything else i have owned. A real drivers car.

Buy both!!!

Stick the 1M in the garage and use it for weekends and holidays and use the 135i for everything else. The 1M i believe will be a future classic and will appreciate in value.

It has to be the 1M surely! I don't care that the performance is a close run thing, spend a couple of grand on performance enhancements and the 1M is almost untouchable.
If you are planning on keeping it long term, again it's a no brainer. I'm sure the 1M will continue to hold it's value for years to come, especially given it's limited run. You'll just blend into the background of humdrum cars in the 135.

I've just been out in mine. It gets alot of admiring glances. Some guy in a big Merc took about a minute to overtake me on the M1, clearly having a good look!!

Or even try one for a year, then sell it with little loss and then get the 135 ?
I had a similar dilema buying a Z8 a few years back. A mate of mine said, "Well if you have one for a year then have to sell it, at least you can say you've owned one". Good advice If you ask me...

10% deposit paid, picking her up on Saturday. Will be a tearful goodbye to trusty Megane R26 in part ex, but all good things come to an end. Including possibly my marriage smile

Thanks for the advice - if there *is* a key weakness i should have asked about, a known dodgy batch, a recall, etc - don't tell me now, as it's done! smilesmilesmile

EXCITED.

V5 looks like two "real" people, each owned for about a year - but a quick scan of linkin and a snoop at their hours via google streetview reveals nice sensible people with sensible houses - good enough for me! smile

Enjoy it, they're great cars biggrin

Having seen one in black recently I did question if I should have ordered that colour, but the white is still nice smile

Out of interest, what px value did they give you?

I have a LY R26 on an 07 plate with 31k miles and I am thinking about upgrading to one of these.

6k. privately a 40k 58 plate glacier white would be between 7.5 and 8.5k - seemingly with a premium over even LY, but of course you have no idea how much they eventually go for.

It has a dent from some bd revsersing into it in Tescos (£720 to fix - deal quote), is due tax and a 40k service, and to be honest the prospect of getting that particular 1M on Saturday, and not having the hassle of boy racers visiting my house to test drive the Megane probably worth the £800 or so it's cost me to trade in! No awkard conversations about track days either...

i had that same thought whilst doing it - but to be honest, worked wonders for the confidence. last owner seems to have an Aston in the driveway already which backs up the dealer's story of a car nut who didnt have much time to put on the miles smilesmile

never been a massive BMW fan to be honest before the 1M arrived. E46 driven by just too many knobs (sorry normal E46 owners!); the rest of the modern M cars just seemed too big and complicated to me.

But, always had a massive soft spot for the Z8 as just one of the coolest cars of the last 20 years. Not many people know what it is, and carries off "retro-modern" look way better than I guess the SLS as it's closest spiritual successor. Well done to you that man! smile
