A little bit OT, but I've always done the opposite and traded all my cars, I would like to sell private but I'm a little nervous about randoms turning up and wanting to drive my car. I'd be happy to take people for a drive (is this common practice when buying/selling privately?) - the only time I've purchased privately the seller took me out as a passenger, the car seemed to drive well no funny noises etc so i bought the car, it turned out to need a load of steering/suspension work as most of it was worn frown This was only a 1500 car so wasn't really too bothered, but wouldn't be happy paying several thousand without a thorough test drive.
Generally I take a buyer out in the car with me and go through a range of driving styles with them, anything they request. If they really want to drive the car then I ask them to get fully comp cover subject to buying and they test drive it before the money changes hands. I've got rid of quite a lot that way including £45k car, £30k car etc
Ah that sounds alright, have you ever had a group of lads turn up and felt uneasy about going for a drive? I suppose the sort of "PH" type cars we own can attract some undesirables as well as petrolhead types. I wouldn't give a second thought to private selling my OH's diesel corsa c, as the likely buyers would be more general public types dad and son etc, however a nice bmw/golf gti type car I'd imagine would be a different story? Maybe i'm just paranoid frown

I have managed to get a better trade price for my last 3 cars than I was advertising them for privately.

Many people prefer to buy from a dealer, if only to get some finance.

Plus with Logbook Loan scams now buying used privately is getting more and more risky. Most HPI checks don't cover logbook loans as the logbook loan company doesn't have to register their interest in the vehicle, which can leave the buyer the total cost of the car out of pocket a few weeks down the road.

Don't logbook loan companies take the log book? So you'd be buying the car with no V5 present which always flags up a concern

So you call DVLA, apply for a missing log book, then when your new one arrives you take out a logbook loan. Then sell the car with the original one.

You're missing the point, the loan is against the car, and they will always come for the car.
Those that do the scams tend not to have too many morels.

Some HPI companies are now covering this, but you need to ask and be specific, ie. will they cover if it has not been registered.
