You are right - you need to be careful about this point.
Some of the contract hire deals they pay the car tax for the duration of the contract as well.
Merc openly publish what it considers acceptable and what t doesn't. It looks fair to me. Treat the car like st and you'll be hit with a bill. Look after it as you should and it's fine. Some of the contract hire deals they pay the car tax for the duration of the contract as well.
From the British leasing guidelines book-you can check who follows thsi guide and most do.
Wear and Tear Guide
When taking a lease car finance option, you have a responsibility to return the car to the finance company in as good a condition as possible. The car will be inspected for damage at the end of the contract and any damage classed as ‘excessive wear and tear’ may incur a penalty to repair the damage. Obviously, having a car for 2 or 3 years is a long time and the inevitable few marks will appear from stone chips etc, so the BVLA (British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association) created a guide to what constitutes as fair wear and tear.
Follow these rules as a guide*
The car should be returned in a safe and roadworthy condition, with all the appropriate documentation, spare keys and equipment.
Cars should be serviced according to the manufacturers service schedule. Books should be stamped at the time of service to keep the history of the car.
Before the car is returned, the car should be in a clean condition to allow a thorough inspection of the car.
Brief Guide to Fair Wear and Tear*
Windscreen
Acceptable - Small scratches outside of drivers eye sight.

Unaccepable - Stone chips or scratches over 25mm in length that have exposed the bare metal or primer or have rusted. Any impact damage. Multiple dents on a single panel.
Decals
Acceptable - All decals need to be removed and all glue residue removed.
Unacceptable - Any damage caused by the removal of such badges and advertising.
Interior Upholstery
Acceptable - Should be clean and tidy, with only slight wear and soiling through normal use.

Haven't yet pulled the trigger on any deal ... current deal expires in 7 weeks
Have looked at 640d (loved) E350 (liked) Audi A6 (ok)
Trouble is, there are no great deals out there unfortunately, apart from GL350 (hated) and the M5 (serious car but sadly too expensive on fuel costs)
May have to wait til last minute then buy a 'stock' car where there are a few deals to be had for immediate delivery
Unless someone can suggest something (please) ...

Would love to hear the breakdown of your costs on the 330d

The second had option is always the alternative (how about this one, but then there is always the uncertainty and potential cost of something major going wrong and costing a lot of money, and there is likely going to be some bigger maintenance bills as the car would be older.
This is the option that I have chosen to take and, fortunately, in the last few years of BMW ownership I have NOT had any unpleasant surprises. Nevertheless running a 4 year old BMW 330d M Sport over nearly two years (and 32k miles) still cost around £320 per month (including a monthly warranty).
It's not a huge leap to justify another £160 - £200 per month to be driving around in a brand new £52k car instead.

You sound too angry, so I'm just going to nod and agree with you!
Sorry, not angry, just confused by what you were compounding the price with. Although I was just about to get married in a few days, so probably a little latent anger somewhere inside me Edited by 5to1 on Monday 28th October 17:32
I just returned my 640d M Sport on a BMW lease. I found my old car on the BCA auction website, it has a condition report which shows a few marks/scratches. I thought it was in perfect nick when it went back, but I was not charged anything by BMW.

Do you know what price it achieved?http://www.bcaimage.com/Document?enc=9jHxjg9JULmBV...
Would be fascinating to see the real £sums involved.
This seems a bit too good to be true?

10k, 6 months up front and only £300 a month personal lease including VAT
The SE maybe but this is the Black edition. There are other prices below this too.
Compared to that Ling site where the same car is like £200 a month more :s
