first slight cock up...as I drained the transmission oil, rather than the engine oil...well, learning along the way!

eventually I did find the drain screw for the engine oil, and it came out nicely.

I violated the oil filter cap quite a lot, as I didn't have a 36 wrench. But with some raw force it did come off with those pliers, might have to work on my refined motor skills though...

and that was it for yesterday! Well, not quite, I also changed the windscreen wipers. Not sure exactly why though.

Now, today I want to refill the transmission oil.

Two questions: is that the right screw?

and if yes - how to get it loose?! That thing is solid...I soaked it in WD40, and I hope that will have done the job. Can@t get to it with a wrench - it'll have to be muscle power...

Any advice?

Pictures the right way up:

My camera has an auto up setting, this messes up the way images are displayed at times.

Switch it off at the camera end.
Thanks for that. It's just odd, as the pictures are all shown correctly on my desktop!

Not much of an Update but some small progress.

Replaced the two boot struts as I didn't fancy decapitation by the very heavy boot lid. Super easy, took 2 minutes.

Also took out two very rusty clamps fixing the exhausts from underneath, new parts ordered from BMW. Random fact: BMW charges a smooth £1 for a normal nut!

Unfortunately the transmission fuel refill screw is still not moving, despite trying most of the tricks mentioned here (hammer etc). Leaving that project for the moment. Will have to readdress this with some of the chemical advice from you. Bummer though, quite annoying!

Also the first attempt of draining the fuel tank with a garden hose did not work, the hose does not reach the fluid. Will have to look into using the fuel pump, as suggested by some of you.

I did take the wheels off though, car is hovering now...

The wheels are in exceptional condition considering the 12 years in the rain, quite remarkable though are the three different tyre treads!

Am I right in thinking that the only available tyres in sizes 235/45 17 and 265/40 17 are Falken? Not finding anything else at the moment. Let me know if you have alternatives!

The breaks look quite sad as expected but that should be easy to fix.

I'm still enjoying this immensely.....you are hereby prohibited from selling on as a 'project', you must complete it and keep us happy with pictures and information. Thankyou please.
I am trying, Selym...but I'd feel a lot more comfortable if I knew what I was doing...

But I am fully committed, no doubt about that!

Kumho Ecsta are available in 235/45/ZR17, not sure about 265. I know because about 5 feet away from me I have a pair that I've just taken off my BMW in the store room at the office..

About 4mm tread, yours for nothing if you want them and it helps you get the car back on the road.

Most kind of you! But according to the internet the 265 are only available as 18" :-(

Small, costly update from today:

New tyres - with identical treads!

One of the next steps...cleaning the reserve. One suggestions was just hot, boiling water and a toothbrush. Other suggestions? Rust remover gel?

Have a look on i4detailing site as they may be local to you if you wanted to collect. Iron-x or similar would be a good start but suspect nothing short of a refurb will sort the corrosion around the bolts
Thanks for that, I'll check it out. Sooner or later I will have them all refurbished but that'll be part of cosmetics at the end. After mortgaging the house...

Working Progress!

Good day yesterday, as I received some much appreciated help and advice from 8Tech. Gerry came over to give me some direction where to prioritize, and what the main faults are and how to tackle them. Very impressive to meet someone with such detailed knowledge of a particular and rare car!

The diagnostics came out refreshingly faultless, apart from a throttle valve 1 fault (Code 18) which might be caused only by the fact that the car hasn't run in 12 years.

The engine is getting sparks, so unlikely that the spark plugs need changing.

When Gerry asked me in a previous post to get distributor caps and rotors I not only didn't know what they are or what they do but also I would not know how to replace them. I only knew that they are bloody expensive!

Anyway, Gerry replaced all four (of course, 2 of each like everything on this car!) and it became quite obvious that this was very necessary, see for yourself:

After that and with a help of some starter spray the car did actually come to live for a split second which was quite amazing for me...

However, according to Gerry it became clear that there was no fuel arriving at the engine. He then bridged the fuel pump relays to see whether the very silent fuel pump would kick in - nothing. Second attempt was to put 12V straight to the fuel pump - also nothing. The fuel pump is sitting under one of the rear seats:

So good news and bad news, pump is not working but that could be the reason that the car won't start. Therefore the car will receive a new fuel pump next week, which will help to drain the tank - and then hopefully let us start the car!

In view of that Gerry dismantled the fuel filters which will be replaced once the tank is empty.

And finally Gerry did manage embarrassingly effortless to take the transmission oil screw out...but I am very glad and can now refill the transmission with BMW's finest.

Overall a good day, and I hope in a weeks' time I will bay able to present you with some real progress...

Thank you all, and especially Gerry, for all the advice and support - really enjoying this!

Great stuff. You're very lucky to have an expert nearby. There will be loads of happy tinkering for you to do, but if you get stumped it's great to know help is nearby. Was the dead fuel pump the reason the car was parked up to start with?
We were speculating about that yesterday, and I think so too!

Right...a couple of apologies to start with: firstly sorry for the delayed update, business trip and waiting for Gerry (8Tech) and the much needed fuel pumps. Further apologies for the lack of pictures in this update, as after todays' events I was so excited that I not only put my trousers into the washing machine but also my phone with all pictures and videos...very annoying!

So Gerry, Simon and the fuel pumps arrived this morning and went straight to work. Simon replaced the fuel pumps which apparently was awkward but successful. The fuel pumps then pumped out the remaining old fuel, new fuel filters were installed and...
