Good to see an update and some quality BMW bearding going on here thumbup

My E12 is nearing completion now, hopefully over the next week. Needs an MOT and then I'll be thrashing it around all summer.

Incidentally: I was at Goodwood this weekend and spoke to both BMW and Alpina. Both said they have a mandate to improve their 'classic' parts availability in the UK for 2015.

No, thats about the going rate for a nice example. Don't forget also that the Stateside example is much lower specced than the Euro CSi too.
I see. A bit out of my price range. I was just shocked after seeing one for sale in blighty for £13k or roundabouts that price. Thats about £20k less than the Yank one.

What were the additions on the Euro models compared to the US?
The biggest upgrades are the rear wheel steering and floating discs and 4 pot ATE calipers on the UK cars, plus they are a little more powerful at 380bhp. Sports seats as standard too.

Plus the steering wheel is on the correct side!

No, he means 8er. It's BMW nerd-speak. In Germany they're referred to like that- 3er, 5er, 8er, etc.
How strange!

Please can we all calm down and just enjoy this restoration project?

I'm quite calm!

On another note, I've been asked for E31 front shocks recently which are BMW only with a comensurate price tag. Years ago a colleague had an 850i in, an old H reg thing with knackered front shocks. Upon prising off the top plastic covers I discovered crimped on locating collars for the inserts - cut these off (nothing ventured etc.....) and pulled the inserts out. We took these down to ECP and matched them to E34 535i units that went in a treat - the E31 struts also had external threads to screw the E34 collars into. At 50 quid each for Boge (probably more now) it was a lot less than the £350 each the jokers at BMW wanted for struts.

Not sure if all E31 front struts are the same, or are the later one crimped over E36 style?

Sorry to disagree, but the E31 8-Series never had crimped on front struts. There is a threaded collar that can be unscrewed and inserts installed, but I can tell you that without any shadow of doubt, 5 and 7 series ones are too long and so will not fit unless you manufacture some extended collars.

There are other aftermarket ones available from Bilstein (which are the only ones I would ever dream of installing), Gabriel and some other cheapo make that when I was asked to install them, were very under-damped.

You cannot buy the collars and Bilsteins are the only ones that come with new ones.

I could be mistaken - it was years ago. But there wwre definitely plastic caps on top - I recall thinking how it looked very E36-ish.

D-Day -1.

Hopefully the car will be finally collected from the bodyshop tomorrow.

Could this be the finale to this awesome thread?

Big day!

Tried to clean the boot carpet today, not much success...

Does anyone have some good advice how to get rather persistent rust stains out of the carpet without discolouring?

Use some foaming domestic carpet cleaner, then pressure washer it, then take advantage of the sunshine for a thorough drying.

Edit. Ensure you take it out of the car first!

Did exactly that, two rounds - but not winning. Might need something more persuasive...

Have you tried a domestic Bissel or similar carpet cleaner on it? We've borrowed one in the past to get puke out of house carpets and it's pretty amazing how effective it can be! You can rent them from Tesco or dry cleaners if you can't borrow one

If the carpet in the CSI is generic to the e31, it may be as easy to purchase another good clean item from a breaker. I would imagine no more than a few pounds?

I'm afraid I will have to do this in stages, as I only got to see the car briefly today. Gerry is taking over now to check whether the car was put back together correctly, testing electrics etc.

But she turned out beautiful!
