Don't get me wrong, they're good cars but, imo, an executive cruiser should have an engine that's very smooth and refined. And that 20d engine isn't that.
I really couldn't agree more & I wouldn't mind if the 20d was a cracking engine but for me its by a country mile the worst BMW engine I have experienced, I loved my 5 series it was comfy & a lovely steer but the 20d was poor beyond belief & ruined it. In fairness though I am in the minority as pretty much every BMW sold has that dreadful 4 pot diesel under its bonnet so either I must be talking out my backside or I know a decent engine when I experience one.
I think what us lot on here under estimate is quite how much more sensitive we are to fuel and cylinder numbers than the majority of the population who couldn't care less. I gave a friend a lift in my V8 petrol engined A8 a few weeks back and he actually asked if it was a diesel. No, it's not running rough or broken!
Times are changing I tell you!

I agree...I am just struggling to go with the times!! Times are changing I tell you!
Putting my sensible cap on for a second...high capacity & high cylinder petrol engines are dying by the minute & don't really make sense...but you can still buy relatively high capacity & high cylinder diesel engines...so why isn't that lousy 4 pot diesel dead yet?!!

You've got a sensible cap? Putting my sensible cap on for a second...high capacity & high cylinder petrol engines are dying by the minute & don't really make sense...but you can still buy relatively high capacity & high cylinder diesel engines...so why isn't that lousy 4 pot diesel dead yet?!!
You need to take that to the charity shop first thing Monday morning!

Yep
My F10 is as good as the 520d but with a 4.4 V8 TT
Now that's MUCH better
Totally agree a 4.4 V8 is a better car than a 520d...I don't think we have said it isn't???My F10 is as good as the 520d but with a 4.4 V8 TT

However - if you have to pay for the running costs of your car yourself and do 25k miles a year like I do, the V8 is not a car to ever consider.
Pound for pound - a 520d takes some beating as an all round practical proposition and that is what I wanted, cannot see why people would diss something that well engineered for the job it does well......
The offerings from Audi, Jaguar and Merc Benz (and I tried all three) are just NOT on the same page IF you want a 4 pot diesel - like I do.
Yes I do have a 3 litre straight six petrol engine car in the garage and yes it is smooth, however the low twenties mpg does not want to make me run it every day.

All these four pot diesels do make the 5, 6, 8, 10 and 12 cylinder petrols all the more special though. Hearing one is turning into a rare treat.
That reminds me of being in LA a couple of years ago Santa monica IIRC and I kept on hearing the rumble and burble of V6/8's everywhere, it was strange as I kept on turning around expecting to see M cars AMG's etc...but it was just standard cars.Every junction sounded cool!

The noise from the V12 is beautiful and so is the car, lets not let the thread get into a pissing contest.
