All these four pot diesels do make the 5, 6, 8, 10 and 12 cylinder petrols all the more special though. Hearing one is turning into a rare treat.
Amen.My F10 is as good as the 520d but with a 4.4 V8 TT
Now that's MUCH better
The noise from the V12 is beautiful and so is the car, lets not let the thread get into a pissing contest.
A DB9 is a lovely thing, a drop dead gorgeous GT with a soundtrack to die for, a fair turn of speed and it's ageing very gracefully indeed. Enjoy it for what it is, but don't go picking a fight with an F10 M5 in one, because you'll be limping home to lick your wounds! The Beemer driver will probably get less marriage proposals from strangers though!

Spot on I was only joking but I've clearly hit a bit of a nerve
F10- M5
0 - 40 kph 1.4 s
0 - 80 kph 3.1 s
0 - 100 kph 3.9 s
0 - 130 kph 5.8 s
0 - 180 kph 9.7 s
0 - 200 kph 11.7 s
0 - 60 mph 3.7 s
0 - 100 mph 7.8 s
0 - 150 mph 18.3 s
V12 Vantage
0 - 40 kph 1.7 s
0 - 100 kph 4.2 s
0 - 200 kph 13.8 s
0 - 300 kph 53.7 s
0 - 60 mph 4.3 s
0 - 100 mph 9.5 s
I see they gave up on 0 - 150
@ HoHoHo: If you have to have a new car i totally agree. I usually end up buying something older for mile munching duties, spending what I'd otherwise spend on depreciation on petrol instead, but that's another debate entirely!
I have no doubt that the 520d is a very impressive overall package when compared with its direct rivals and they seem to fare very well on the emissions front for BIK purposes too.

So back on topic.
Took the 520d Msport for the first longish journey yesterday, about 200 miles. Was getting low fourties in terms of MPG.
The engine is great for a four cylinder and coupled with the automatic box makes for good process. However, it does have that tractor noise when pulling away from a standing start and is rough when extended hard through the gears. This is something the 6 cylinder in my previous 730d did not do. You could describe it as "creamy" in comparison.
On balance, for me, MPG is not that important. I would be happy to forgo some of the economy for more refinement and power. I think a 530d or 535d would have been nearer the "sweet spot".
So I will just have to slum it in the 520d for two years.

Interesting to read. Given we have pretty similar bases of comparison (Aston V12 (and I used to have a DB9 (I'm a lawyer and I did Maths A Level, so I can use triple brackets )) and X5 40d), I'm interested that you don't feel that the 520d's acceleration is a little sluggish. I'll have to try one.

My wife has a new 120d M Sport and the only point that lets it down is the 4 pot diesel rattle which as you say is nonexistent in 6 cylinder diesels.Took the 520d Msport for the first longish journey yesterday, about 200 miles. Was getting low fourties in terms of MPG.

She potters around on the school run never on long runs and gets nearly 50mpg which is brilliant.
