So I bought an X6 last month and today I was waiting at a steep junction and it kept rolling backwards despite being in Drive.

I've had plenty of autos before and they've always dealt with this.

Is there something wrong with my car??

Any help appreciated.

Why would you hold the car in drive on a steep hill without your foot on the brake?

If its the new ZF 8 speed, it locks up at very low rpm. So isn't designed to sit there slipping the torque converter for a great length of time.

Ya know that's a really good point paperbag

I think maybe I've just forgotten how to drive an auto as i have been in a manual for the last 3 years.

Oops heehee

I thought the newer autoboxes disengaged the TC when stopped as a fuel saving measure?. If the gearbox is disconnected from the engine then you will be rolling if you don't have the brakes applied.

Why not just use the Auto Hold functionality? I presume the X6 has this, the 5 Series does - it'll automatically engage park and handbrake when you stop and automatically release the handbrake and engage drive when you touch the throttle.

Tbh I was just being an idiot it seems.

I've used the auto hold thing a few times but just forget to press it when i get in the car which makes it a little redundant as a feature to me.

Just press it instead of pressing the handbrake release button, as it'll do that for you as well. Net increased button pressing = zero
