Hi All

I'm looking at getting an early X3 as a 2nd car and would appreciate anyone's feedback who has ran the 3.0 petrol. Is there anything I should be looking out for or any problems I should be aware of? Budget is around £6.5k so will probably be 70k plus miles and 04/05 plate.

Cheers in advance

I was looking for a E53 X5 3.0 diesel for my wife in June last year, but could not find one with the right spec (colour (Sterling Grey)/mileage).

A one owner 05 plate 3.0 petrol came up for sale at a local dealer with 49,000 miles, full service history, panoramic sunroof and sat nav so we purchased the car.

Issues to date:
Tyre pressure sensor light kept lighting up (error code issue).
Front lower arm bushes.
Squeaking lower tailgate (replaced latches and keeps).
Throttle body pipe split.
Mesh under the headlights cracked and was replaced (this mesh is plastic and of very poor quality in my opinion).
Seats can show signs of wear.
Steering wheel can also so signs of war.

We have driven the X5 13,000 miles including a 3,000 mile trip to Spain last summer I like it alot.

Comfortable and drives well, especially for the 'type' of vehicle it is.

Some will say the V8 is the one to go for, and they may be right.

When we change this one we will go for a V8 in the E70 version.

My wife loves driving the X5 (replaced her Rav 4):

As a lover of the 3.0i 6 cyl, one of these was my only option and I got a pretty well specced '54 plate auto with 37k on it about 11 months ago. I still won't consider a diesel car.
I paid just under 9k from a used car dealer - which was very competitive at the time from my research.
I still had my 130i M Sport but subsequently sold that as a pointless doubling up of 'main' car and bought a JCW Mini to blat around in locally.

I have been very impressed with it and had few issues.
Just before I bought it the sun-roof mechanism jammed and it cost the dealer about £750 to fix - a common fault and could be as much as £1200 odd. Mine was don to lack of use but if the control cartridge goes, that is the expensive fix.
The driver door mirror stopped working but a battery disconnection and reconnect fixed it (following the need for a new battery a couple of months ago).

It handles way better than it should and is a bit of a Q car as people don't expect to get outdragged by it out of roundabouts or from lights.
I get 24.5mpg from the display as an overall figure but with very little distance/motorway work and the car is used enthusiastically.
Make sure it has Xenons.
The side steps are actually a pain as you can't really stand on them so you have to stretch your leg over them to get in and out - my wife gets really annoyed at getting muddy legs.
Seems pretty good driving across fields and rough tracks and it tows my 3 motorbike trailer without noticing, Even the 14ft super-heavy Ifor Williams 4 wheeler I borrowed was fine once I'd got it moving.

The auto (in D) gets a bit hunty when doing around 60 or 70 and that can be annoying but not sufficiently enough to be a real negative.

Go and try one - I think it's a great compromise between a car and SUV.

Oh - I also had weeping air from two tyres but a good clean up of the rims and extra jollop seems to have cured it. this seems to be a common problem on any alloys though as I had the same problem on the JCW and have seen loads of reports.

Definitely worth a try IMHO.

At that age, you only get the 230bhp engine but you don;t get the mass of different servicing needs of the 164bhp later one (if indeeed it's in the X3 anyway - might have gone diesel only by then anyway).
