Hi everyone,

I am in the market for a used E46 or E90 and I think i'll go for 320d although I am not sure, but I am split as to which model I should go for and whether to go for petrol or diesel.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks

Biggest question is what's the budget?

Sub £4k then E46

Over £6k then E90

£4-6k is no mans land

lol true say, I originally intended to leave the question open between a diesel or petrol but then decide to stick the 320d in between. I'll put that down to proof reading!

Buy an E46 then and have a bit left over for a bit of fettling with that budget, it'll invariably need some suspension bushes and/or thermostats

Depends on your annual mileage

E46, forget 4 cylinder, so 320i, but the there's the perennial argument a 330i cost no more to run, but your looking at 25-30mpg against 45-50mpg for a 320d

If I was going petrol I'd be trying for an E90 325i, though you might need to stretch the budget a little (and still 30mpg give or take)

I do just under 10000 miles annually

looks a very good option, but would you go for this over diesel considering the difference in the mpg

At 10k per annum I'd take the petrol, diesel I'd run (and do) with BMW insured drivetrain warranty (costs £29 per month)

Diesel car is more expensive to buy, more expensive fix and less reliable and the petrol six is much nicer

10000miles at 28mpg @ £1.31ltr = £2141

10000miles at 45mpg @ £1.35ltr = £1363 plus £348 for driveline warranty (covers engine, gearbox, turbo)
Equals £1711

Difference £430 less for the diesel

But you won't buy an E90 diesel worth having for your budget

I'm biased but I'd definitely go for an E90. Great cars.

E90 would seem more sensible on that budget. That 55-plate 325i seems a bargain to me for a clean and tidy unabused example.

This is an interesting topic, as we have one of each in our household. One thing that would put me off the E46 is rust. Our 55 plate E90 (well, E91) hasn't got a spot of rust on it. My E46 on the other hand is suffering (and has done since I've owned it). Seems that it's a general problem on all ages of E46 right up to the end of production, and it's one of those things you can end up chasing round the car, and could potentially spend a lot of money fixing properly.

Unless we've just been lucky with our E91, I have a feeling that the E90 is much more resistant to corrosion than the E46, and would be interested to hear if any E90 owners on here have had any problems in this area?

The E90 also has superior crumple zones more airbags is marginally better for pedestrian impacts.
Boot is a touch bigger
Rear legroom bigger
Handling is superior - also as its newer the rubber will have perished less.

As its a newer car there will be more standard kit

Indeed - as I said above, I'm an E46 fan (having had two of them), but as much as I love my E46 330 Ci, if I was looking to spend £4k - £5k on a 3 series today as a daily driver, I'd try and find a nice E90 in budget - or save up a bit more.

We've taken our E91 325i from approx 30k miles to 70k miles in the last 4 years, and its not needed more than servicing and tyres - not even had to touch the brakes yet. The only mechanical fault so far has been a leaky oil filler cap gasket which was fixed for peanuts. They can have expensive problems, but then so can the E46 - especially when you factor in the older design and poor anti-corrosion protection. In my opinion, the E90 also feels more modern inside (and on the road), and better built.
