BMW 535i Vs 535d
Discussion
You have to be honest with yourself.
Do you want a car that feels 'ok' around town but special for those rare moments you get to open it up on an open clear road once in a while?
Or do you want a car that will feel fast 90% of the time on the road without having to ring its neck?
But Turbos change the game somewhat. On a petrol car you almost get the best of both worlds. Its hard to pick a diesel over a modern turbo'd petrol car unless its a large displacement NA in which case that wins every time imo (If your situation warrants the fuel billage )
Noise is also a big thing. If you are buying purely for fun, even an M57 can't beat the sound of a petrol straight 6/v8.
Noone can really tell you what is best for you. Lots of people say a Petrol engine is perfect for my needs, but I didn't want a 530i, I wanted the d

Yep, agreed. The reality for most people is that they can't legally drive at excessive speeds. The N54 is a superb engine in my eyes. It'll pull cleanly from 1,300 rpm in any gear, yet will wind out to 7,000 without tailing off in power. It sounds great, is silky smooth, and - save for a few acknowledged issues - seems to be pretty robust. I was cruising along the motorway last night in 6th at about 65 mph, and it was showing just over 6 litres per 100km (39 mpg) which is great. My average combined consumption over the last six months and 7,500 miles of ownership is 9.8 litres / 100km (24 mpg) and 90% of that has been city driving with a lot of short trips. Am now leaning more and more to the N55 Engine I have to say but I think I will get the Hartge Conversion. I have a drive in the 535d next week and maybe they have a 335i as well. I think MPG wont be an issue with 8 speeds and eco pro but then it will be even better on the diesel as well.

Thats pretty decent consumption. Around town doing very short trips with the car never really warming up I am seeing ~25mpg out of the 530d (it can 'improve' to 28-30mpg if the car is warm), mixed driving is around 33-36mpg and pure M way is 42-44mpg (50mpg+ if I keep below 60-65mph)The gap between petrol and diesel consumption only really starts to grow with motorway miles.

Looks like its more and more petrol as I read. Anyone done the Hartge Conversion or indeed the Quaife LSD?
I would go with a Juicebox rather than Hartge, they have been tried and tested across the globe and everyone seems happy with them. I bought the early one off Terry, the guy who started the company, wasn't called a Juicebox then, and that was superb.
I can't see the point of paying £2200 on a Hartge.

Personally I'd go for azurite black with beige leather (or champagne merino if your budget can stretch that far) with piano black trim......lovely.
DING DING! V8 M Sport in Sophisto with Oyster & Piano. Lots of toys too.

Problem with Azurite is delivery time but that's first choice and then Sophisto and Black Nappa Leather as I find that the best Beige and Champagne am not too keen and also gets so easily marked.Personally I'd go for azurite black with beige leather (or champagne merino if your budget can stretch that far) with piano black trim......lovely.

Mine is Sophisto Grey with black interior and I think it really suits the car, gets a lot of compliments.http://www.bmw.co.uk/en_GB/topics/owners/accessori...

Wow! http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2014...
If that was a touring I would be on the phone offering 40k right now!
That will be worth a fair bit more than a 535 in 3 years, so I reckon will be much cheaper to own overall.

You've just lost 10 man points for saying that. A V8 is never too much. In fact, it's only 2/3 a proper engine
Touche and yes I realise after saying how bad it sounds BUT I have a X5 4.4i V8 that's I got new And a Maserati QP Sport V8 to satisfy my V8 urges and yes V8 best engines by far even more so than V10 and V12 IMO.rickinm said:
