Wing Mirrors, scratching when folding in & out?
Discussion
I bought my car a month ago, BMW Approved Used with 2 year warranty. This is a pretty solid warranty but does not cover 'trim items'. Recently, a mate pointed out the scratches on my wing mirror base. I had never noticed them before as they are tucked underneath the mirror and totally hidden when folded out.
Now, the scratches I imagine are from grit & stones being kicked up off the road and getting caught in the gap...then dragged round when the mirrors are folded in. What I am unsure of is whether to bring this up with BMW when I am next in there.
Whilst not really noticeable it is still a £25k car that is scratching itself through a poor design? or is it just fair nature of a 3-4 year old car that lives on the motorway?
Anyone ever come across this before?

I can see a lot of bug splatter and one (or two?) scratches on there. There's not a hope in hell IMHO that BMW will do anything about stones being kicked up. Its a car, stones fly up all the time from your own and other peoples wheels. Equally every wing mirror I know of has a bottom to it, hence any could get scratched really. Just put some touch up on them and enjoy your new car
Washed & waxed it on Saturday, but a few hours through the countryside embedded bugs everywhere.
The scratches aren't on the mirror housing itself & aren't from stones being thrown up....the scratches are on the actual 'base' of the mirror assembly, and are caused by stones getting caught between the rotating mirror housing & it's base, and when it folds in/out the stones get dragged round with the base. This is a design flaw IMO.
The fact both mirrors are scratched in a similar manner, and that when the mirrors are folded out this area is totally hidden makes me assume my above guess is accurate.
Would be interested in any other F10/BMW owners could check their mirrors to see if they suffer from this. - more out of curiosity then a need to find a solution.
edit: I have circled the problem areas, second pic is hidden byt eh glare but both have multiple curved gouges...

Just to update the situation, BMW are replacing the wing mirror in their entirety. They put up no resistance, have been really positive & proactive and are doing it under a good will gesture as my BAU warranty doesn't cover trim items. Car was picked up by them this morning!
