Just put the key in the 130 and all was well. Hit the start button, first second was fine and then the car went into a total spasm. Flickering lights, solenoids whacking away and unable to get the key out.

Opened the bonnet and connected up a small trickle charger and this allowed me to remove the key. So in short, it looks like a flat battery but the battery has only recently been replaced and the car did a long run all yesterday and a nip to the shops this morning.

I can only guess that the long run with lights and aircon running actually drained the battery although obviously it should have been fine. Or the alternator has packed up but I have assumed there would have been a warning?

Anyway, it's on charge and if that gets it going again I am wondering if being totally flat will cause an issue as I'm aware that changing the battery in the old fashioned way can lead to having to get BMW to come and plug a PC in to reset it?

Voltmeter on it, see if the voltage rises with RPM. Same happened on my E39, had to replace both in the end.

Haven't one to hand.

Had the car on a small charger for. Few hours now and it looks like there's nothing going into the battery so maybe a cell has collapsed.

Will stick a power pack into it in the morning and see if I get a result.

However, the manual doesn't say what this symbol is that's now on the dash. It's red but does go to orange if I flick the immobiliser on/off. My main concern is that the symbol is warning me that I need to invite a polyester suited gibbon onto my property:

It is the steering lock symbol. Does the car have an AGM battery? If so was battery registration carried out with the new battery?

My first thought was that it was steering lock but I can turn the wheel. Or at least I pulled a quarter turn to check and it was moving.

The battery was replaced a few months ago. I went to do it myself but read numerous horrors about disconnecting without having a PC connected to the car so took it to Halfords to have it done. (Incidentally, that's when I decided I'd had enough of modern cars or rather manufacturers tricks).

They did the replacement while it was connected up to their laptop etc. it's been fine until last night.

I'm wondering if a cell in the battery has collapsed and it's buggered.

It's been on trickle charge overnight so I'll see if that has brought any life to the party. Plus I'll be able to connect a power pack later and see if that brings the car to life and confirms that the battery has suddenly died.

I'd love a modern BMW, but then I remember things like this and coding a new battery. Hope you get it sorted (relatively) simply OP.

Thanks. It's why I bought another classic Rangie this week. Nothing I can't work out myself. That's the bit I hate, having to go to a garage over a silly issue and not knowing the solution.

Good news this morning is that with the booster attached all the warnings have gone but no juice to start. Does look like a fried battery. Will get a new one delivered and see if that solves it.

Well, new battery arrived. I've bunged it in and the car is sorted.

I did just run it down to these chaps who are a couple of miles away who very kindly plugged it in and ran diagnostics to see if there were any issues. Of which there were none.

So a huge thanks to George and they certainly get my recommendation and will be doing the service that is due.
