The 6 pot diesels aren't all they're cracked up to be, they still rattle and bang.

I'm sure the tuned 4 pot is just fine for the OP.

Oh yes they are, they are really superb.
As an engine they are workman like in what they do the engine in my 335d rattles just like any other diesel sends a shudder through the car when it starts and is very vocal for the first 2k rpm.

My RS6 wobbles the car upon start up or blipping the throttle smile - not quite the same ..

Disagree, compared with the 4 pots they are super smooth. Not quite yet 6 pot petrol refined but a very significant step up from the 4 pots in terms of refinement.
We'll have to agree to disagree then, BMW 6 pot diesels are nearer 4 pot diesels than they are BMW straight 6 petrol engines.

Just had a very pleasant break in the Lake District and, as we took the dog, we went in my partner's E91 335d; after a couple of weeks of driving it I was quite warming to the car and was even pondering whether I'd be happy living with an F31 335d as my daily driver. However, I got back in my E92 335i to go to work today and soon remembered what I'd been missing; it may not be much quicker than the 335d but the level of smoothness and refinement is night and day IMO. Therefore, while I do think the 6 pot diesels are a step forward over their 4 cylinder equivalents, I think I'd have to agree with Wills on this one; I wouldn't really say that the 335d is super smooth compared to my old 123d but I'd certainly say the 335i is super smooth compared to either!

The conclusion I've reached is that if you do a high mileage and need 4 wheel drive the 335d makes a lot of sense; however, if you're doing less than 15k miles/annum a 335i (or an S4 if you need 4 wheel drive) would probably get my vote. All IMHO and each to their own of course!
