Chaps,
One of my rear top mounts has failed on my e46 330d touring.

They were only recently replaced so I'm thinking it's probably sensible to go with stronger items this time or they'll just end up breaking again.

I've heard that e46 m3 cab mounts are considered to be stronger but does anyone know if they're interchangeable with a touring or if there's anything else I should consider?

I'm running genuine BMW E46 cab rear top mounts on my E30 after the previous 'upgrade' E36 versions, also genuine BMW items, didn't last very long.

They're interchangeable with E30, E36, E46 models regardless of the body derivative afaik.

They don't look too tricky to swap over either....: http://youtu.be/x_1zTqHtzI8

It seems like it'll take more time to get all the trim out of the boot than it will to change the bloody things over!

^^^ confirmed!!

Make sure the big washers are on top and bottom, if they're missing the mounts fail early.

Rogue Engineering are the most robust, moreso than OEM E46 M3 Cabriolet mounts. Not cheap at £100/pair, but have a lifetime guarantee.

Get the Meyle HD. All the others are a waste of money.

Powerflex recently introduced them fpr the e46. I had them installed, works like a charm!

definitely one of the best and reversed so can be then done totally from underneath, they are also rebuildable.

^I'd agree with that.

My E36 (saloon) top mount looked rather similar!

Ended up going for the standard top mount kit from ECP. Unfortunately failed not long after (again). Interestingly, it survived for 140k on the original top mounts.

shout OI, BOTH OF YOU ^^^ there should be another big washer on the bottom, like the one on top. Looks like it's corroded off, remains might be sat on the bottom of the damper rod.

It's job is to stop the whole mount punching through when you hit a pothole or whatever, like yours have done smile

You don't get one with new mounts, or new dampers, you need to order separately from BMW if yours are missing.

Number 6 here, it mirrors number 12

Ask me how I now know this hehe

Good point.
If you compare the good one:

With the shot one

The big washer is there but it's obviously going to be weak if the equivalent on the other side failed.
Any idea where I can get one?

On top of that the car is sitting about 2cm lower on the broken side so I suspect the spring might've gone as well...

Can you still get the Z3 reinforcement plates as well? I used them on my 328i and the M3 ones on the front

Not sure, I could see a small crack from one of the bolt holes on mine so I put some big washers on.

I don't know where to get those missing pieces from except BMW frown
