Gents,

I'm looking at buying a 2003-2005, 3.0 manual convertible. Budget set around £7k.

What are the main things to look out for on cars of these eras? Is there anything in particular? Vanos, etc.

Thanks in advance.

Tim.

Have a look at the Z4forum, think there's a guide with common problems.

in General they are very robust, especially the engine. I can remember from my research that rear springs snapping was fairly common, as was the roof mechanism I think due to it not being properly weather protected.

Rear springs do snap, the alarm can have a tiz in hot weather as well, that and a slight oil leak from the gearbox are all the issues I've had over 7 years.

There can't be many more bombproof engines than the M54.

Congratulations on the purchase.

Keep an eye on the steering, mine developed the far too common sticky steering issue. Have finally decided to get it sorted with a new steering column which is costing circa £2500.

Nice car - congrats - now you will be wanting a Z4M smile

I like the wheels on your car. Nice colour too - enjoy!

I've know a few people who have had these - they've all loved them.

I had a 3.0 z4 2 years ago will mixed feelings, when the car worked its was awesome and very capable, though on hot days the car developed the sticking steering issue which just made the car awful to drive.

Also worth checking the drain holes aren't blocked for the roof as the roof motor will be submerged in water, I also had issues with water Ingres down the passenger a pillar, I believe this is also a common issue.

Lovely car but with a few costly design faults.
