E90 330i cam motor problem

I recently been having some hestitation on acceleration in my 330i.After analayis (plugging in the OBD) BMW now reckon this is down to a faulty cam motor. I looked this up and apparently these engines do have some motor that adjusts cam timings....I am not used to such fancy technology!
The thing that trouble same is its exactly the same symptom (feels like fuel starvation when you accelerate) that I had about a year ago which BMW fixed under warranty by rebooting the software.

Does this ring any bells with anyone who has experienced similar?

Is it the Direct Injection engine? My Dad had similar problems with his and I think in the end they replaced the high pressure fuel pump and the coil packs. It would run fine for ages and then it would falter if you tried to accelerate in a highish gear.
