Ive never understood why Alpinas keep the bonnet and boot badge from the original BMW but have their own badges on the wheels and steering wheel.
Alpina only put their badges on replacement parts, whereas the bonnet and boot are original BMW donor parts

The official response is that it symbolizes the partnership and the cars are a BMW Alpina. Lots of people on Alpina Register seem to frown on people who change the badges for aftermarket Alpina ones

^^^ Each to their own, but I have no interest in them myself. It's quite frequent that people seem to think my car is a fake as it still has BMW badges on it though

And that is different to E46 M3's how?
Because at 3-4 years old an E46 was still around 65% of list when it first came out, but a B3 was down to around 50% of list.
By the time they got to 10 years old they had sort of evened out, both pretty close in price.

So in the case of the Alpina B3 and M3 I would expect similar.

M3 at 3-4 years old for around £35k retail, B3 I bet you you will be able to get for around £29k.

It's hard to tell at the moment looking on autotrader as obviously the M3 is now 8 years old and an old model, so the prices reflect that, and the run out deals on them, you could be in a new one for under £40k. But even so, a 4 year old one under 50k miles is still £28000.

But if you look at up to 2008 M3's with up to 50k miles and DCT vs 2008 B3 auto there is a £4000 gap still, £24k for the M3 and £20k for the B3.
The B3 was £51,300 list before any options.

I just wish they had done it with the B3 as well.

True review, it may have got a few petrolheads to seriously consider the Alpina.

I've check it again and cannot see that - what time frame do you see it for the 0-100mph?

just after they start AND the Alpina fuel tank is empty the M3 half full.
That surely is pretty amateurish for a test which is a shame.

Good spots, test was definitley rigged.

I would always choose the M3

So how much does Eco pro setting does it sap the M3's perfoance?

Would be good to see its 0-100mph time in Eco pro /comfort/sport/sport+/M nutter setting.

The difference between a low fuel level and a half tank will be about 20 odd kg...

Intersting isnt it that the M3 uses the N55 engine whereas Alpina in their B3 Bi Turbo uses the older N54.

As I'm about to change my E92 D3 BT for the new M3 this has left me in a bit of a quandary.
Love the looks and feel of the M, but the stats for the Alpina are pretty compelling.

The D just looks a little too staid in saloon form, and the wheels really are a bh to clean properly!

Re depreciation - I'd never buy a new Alpina again.
Mine cost £43k and is now a month off 3 years old, 28k miles and I've been offered £19-20k.

Those that are calling the test rigged, we must take in account that the on board camera shots might not have been taken during the drag race we see, my understanding is these things are edited with all sorts of different footage used.

But if the M3 was in eco pro mode and the D3 in launch control as per the footage it's a joke and Sutcliffe should be ashamed.

The M3 has 23% more power, most testers have got it to 60 in 3.8/3.9 seconds, there is now way the D3 is as quick.

Torque is great when making progress without redlining it, for every day relaxing driving, but it is just there to get your bhp figure when flooring the car, and so BHP is everything for these tests, and with 23% more power the D3 is never going to be as quick.

I think the D3 is a great car, I would love one, but against the M3 when Alpina have a B3 available?
That was what I didn't get, a real missed opportunity to get some potential M3 owners looking at an Alpina.

The D3 will appeal to Alpina die hards and those that were looking at 335d's (and don't know what discounts are available on them) they will not get many, if any, switching from an M3 IMHO.

I think the D3 is a potential alternative for an M3 owner/purchaser

The video does not reflect the comments regarding the acceleration test.

At the start, both cars are at 0mph, the Alpina even shows maybe 5 mph on the analogue dial

By the end of that short clip, the M3 is clearly significantly ahead, 51 vs 43 mph.

The settings show that the M3 was in Economy, Sport, Sport with 1/2 a tank of fuel and the Alpina had Launch Control active, Sport+ with an empty tank. Granted, these may have not been the actual clips from the data they used, but the settings are stacked in the Alpinas favour and yet the M3 performs better.

I like the Alpina, but their splitter really does not suit modern BMW styling. frown
