Just realised, much to my disappointment, that when Auto Hold is engaged the brake lights are on!

Poor form, BMW.

Its taken me a while to notice, love the auto hold feature, no creeping forward at lights etc but I'm dead against sitting on the brakes at lights/junctions - especially at night, and last night was when I noticed.

My Volkswagen doesn't do it.

First world problems and all that... But still, irritating. Do I need to put it in park every time I stop at lights? Engage the electronic handbrake?

Not strictly on topic but I am with you on keeping footbrake depressed at junctions etc. Bought a new 328i Touring a few months ago and the auto start/stop feature restarts the engine once you take foot off footbrake. So I always disable it. Pointless technology for me!

Why do you assume its using the foot brake? I could just as easily believe that its keeping the lights on as a safety feature. If you press Park do the lights go out?

Yes in park they are out.

Safety feature? Huh?

You stop on a busy road, auto hold lets you take your foot of the brake, your brake lights go out, cars approaching from behind no longer realise you've stopped. Keeping the lights is therefore a safety feature

Erm, for many years now people have been driving manuals and popping the handbrake on at lights and when stopped.

You shouldn't be sitting on the brakes at lights etc so it's no safety feature, just a way of dazzling people behind you at night.

Erm, no. The auto function replaces use of the footbrake in autos 95% of the time (in creeping queues etc when you would never have bothered applying handbrake). For the remaining 5% when you would have applied the handbrake (most drivers never do) just use the switch BMW has given you and stop being so lazy if dazzle really bothers you - it does not activate the brake lights.

It's there to stop the car creeping at traffic lights and junctions etc, people utilise this because its it's easier than putting the handbrake on. It shouldn't keep the brake lights illuminated, that's just silly.

My VW doesn't which is much better. Auto hold in huge VW is also on by default, seems stupid you have to actually put huge BMW one on every time you start the engine.

Not having a go, just saying why not use the conventional handbrake if the dazzle bothers you? I never use the auto hold function, seems a bit pointless to me. And even more so if it puts the brake lights on. I think Volvos do the same.

Eh? confused

Who the hell gets dazzled by brake lights?

If you're getting dazzled by brake lights then I suggest you contact the Ministry of Transport and tell them we have our brake light policy all wrong.

Am I the only one who gets annoyed by people sitting on their brakes at lights or in a queue at night? More so if it's raining?

My point is auto hold is handy in an auto. But I'd never knowingly sit there for a couple of minutes with my brake lights on. It renders the BMW feature pointless to me but it's great in the VW as it's like putting the handbrake on when stopped.

Can I ask what specifically annoys you about people who do this?

My confusion comes from the fact that I don't really understand what's annoying about it. I don't get annoyed if people in front of me do it, I don't even notice to be honest.

I've never been dazzled by brake lights and my eyes are quite light sensitive, it's none an issue for me.

Have you thought about therapy if you get annoyed with brake lights?

I have had X5's for the last 5 years and can't recall when I last used the park function over the auto hold. The auto hold is just a great ideas and I personally don't really car what's going on behind me and whether the brake lights are on or off although on balance I would rather they were on to ensure other users knew I was not moving. I therefore hope you don't find yourself behind me as you would be very annoyed.

Guess you better stock up on the valium, with stop-start systems becoming ubiquitous I think you'll be spending quite a bit of time being annoyed by the person in front of you frown

(Personally, provided the person isn't pumping the brakes, it doesn't bother me at all, in fact I've never even thought about it before).

I'm with you AB. With three bright red brake lights on continually in front of me - at rest - I get dazzled! But I am an old git of 62 I suppose so I have to grumble about something!!
