I'm on the search for a new car and a 2.2 auto Z4 has come up for sale round the corner from me, its an 04 plate with less than half the average mileage for its age.

Running costs don't bother me but what scares me with a used BMW is potential parts costs, any common issues with these?

Also is it worth buying a warranty for it and average warranty prices on 10 year old BMW's?

Thanks.

Apart from the auto box they are very solid cars, do you have to buy an auto?

Its just that I've been driving around a DSG for a few years now and I prefer the auto with the optional manual mode.

I have looked at manual versions as well though but this car seems better value for its age/mileage and looks in top condition.

Well in that case go for it!
The z4 has the legendary m54 engine that is super reliable, most if not all the suspension is based on the proven e46 platform so nothing major or expensive to go wrong there.
Check plastic thermostat housing these are prone to leaks not expensive only an hours job, broken rear springs are common, cheap to replace takes about 10 mins a side only need to remove the lower shocker bolt to get the new spring in.
The roof motor can fail due to blocked drain holes and flooding the motor compartment but a bit of preventative cleaning should see that this never happens, when you leave the hood down it exposes the motor housing making it very easy for large leaves ect to accumulate in the housing, don't leave the top down near trees in autumn.

Had my z4 for 3 and a half years and it's been great, must have options are 108 wheels, heated leather and xenon lights, any other options ontop of those are a bonus.

The spec seems pretty basic, it just has the parking sensors and everything else is standard I think, has the 16" alloys.

46k miles on a 10 year old car seems good though, its up at £6,995. There is a fully speced 2.5 on for just under 6k but it has 80k miles on it.

I'll probably go and have a look at it tomorrow.

I wouldn't get too hung up on mileage, these are super reliable cars, I have 110k on mine and it feels great.
To be honest 7k on a 2.2 auto is top dollar.

The 2.5 seems to have the same fuel figures and same tax but has more power, probably worth having a look at that as well then!!
