118d vs 120d....
Discussion
I'm looking for advice from anyone who has driven both the 118d and the 120d.
After having my 2010 520d stolen I have been looking at what to replace it with, i'd like to move on to a newer (potentially less vulnerable to being stolen) F model
I have seen a fully specced 118d with the options i would ideally like, sat nag, leather auto etc, however I have only driven the 120d, which I really enjoyed. plenty of poke when needed by amazingly economical.
Am I likely to be disappointed by the 118d? A bhp difference from 116 to 184 seems a big jump?

I don't think you would like either also
To be honest the power of 118 and 120 are quite lacking
A I series needs to be a 123d
I've had an 09 118d (140bhp) and currently have a 2013 120d (184bhp), also had a 320d and 530d in between (for reference of 'poke'...)To be honest the power of 118 and 120 are quite lacking

.... And I couldn't disagree more on the 120d front.
Yes, the 118d felt lacking but the latest 120d has a surprising turn of pace, particularly when you consider if does 0-60 in 7.1 which is faster than most 'warm' hatches and will scare the bigger stuff too
Granted they are very small inside and a clear step down from an f10 in terms of quality materials but they go very well.
I would only go for the 120d option though..

Spot on ! I've just gone from a 2010 E90 335d to a 2013 120d M Sport auto. 120d not slow when driven in earnest. A lot more fun to drive without that boat anchor of a 6 pot engine up front too.
The only problem is the 4 pot diesel sounds like a canal boat though! all joking aside the 120d is a great mix of performance and economy that's for sure. Thanks for all the advice, I had a back to back test drive in both a 120d Manual and the 118d I was interested in which has the 8 speed auto, I have to say while the 120d is noticeable quicker the 118d with the auto box is great, still no slouch at all.
So.... ive bought 2012 the 118d M-Sport F20, Mineral Grey, Privacy glass, Leather, Pro Business Sat Nav, Full Leather and several other extras.... I will mainly be using this for work, visiting customers, typically just me in the car it felt a nice place to be, ridiculously economical but quick enough to get past any slow moving traffic and have a bit of fun when I feel the need. We have a Cayenne as the main family car for weekends etc so I think this will fit in just perfectly, love the look of it too, has really grown on me and strangely I think it makes me feel 17 again!
