I know "what car" threads are annoying, but I have one on which people might actually be able to help.

I have a very flexible budget (say £10k to £20k), which makes it hard to narrow down which petrol 3 might be the best for me. Obviously, I don't want to spend more for the sake of it, so a car that costs twice as much would have to be a fair bit better.

My needs/wants:-

(1) Has to be petrol.
(2) Vastly prefer a 6 cyl to a 4 cyl turbo.
(3) Has to have decent suspension and turn in (i.e. not like the F30 320d I drive recently, which was awful).
(4) Has to be manual.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

The decision is made easier by the fact that you have already eliminated the overwhelming majority of 3-series available for sale (the diesels, the petrol four-pots and the automatic six-pots).

There are currently 2900 3-series for sale on PH, of which just 33 are manual petrol cars with six-cylinder engines between £10k and £20K. So you have eliminated 98.86% of the currently available used stock.

Personally I would go for an E91 330i manual touring but that's just me. Depending on where you live and how far you are prepared to travel to view, you might find you only have a choice of one or two cars at a time so it's really a case of finding one that's not been abused and buying that.

If I had 20k I'd be hunting for a manual 335i saloon or estate.

M3 might be a bit OTT as I want this car for a family run-around with a bit of poke and nice engine sound, rather than a weekend car.

I have driven the 335i (as my mum has one) and I quite liked it, but the turbo killed the engine sound for me.

I think I would prefer a 330, so the question is really which generation will be the best given my (fairly wide) budget limits.

Is an older version for £10k going to be materially less good (ignoring mileage) than a newer version for £20k?

That leaves you with a 325 or 330 then! No point in having a 325, so has to be a 330, cracking cars. Nowhere near your top budget either.

True. Less powerful but much nicer to listen to.

M3z make great daily cars, that's the point!

Oh. Worth the additional cost over a 330? I suppose one benefit is lower depreciation due to scarcity/classic status.

But at a given purchase price point, much more expensive to maintain.

An M3 is a world away from a 330i. Not just in terms of power, they drive significantly different. They are more expensive to run, mind.

I'd imagine the upkeep on an e46 M3 to be less than the depreciation alone on a ->20k 330/335i.

Another way of saying 335i?
I'd get v8 power

I agree they do drive differently and the E92 M3`s chassis is a peach and that was the biggest difference for me when I swapped my M3 for a E90 330i but in terms of running costs the M3 is double in costs for everything when compared to the 330i and my tax halved insurance halved and servicing the 330 is half the price too and I cut my fuel bills more than in half just to give you an idea.

The N52 engine in my 330i is still a nice power plant though very smooth and free revving but obviously there is far more reward when back road blasting in the M3 but I am not convinced the E92 M3 is worth the extra in terms of daily driving but I would imagine the E46 M3 would be a complete all rounder though.

For the reasons already / now stated by the O/P.

Looking for a family car with a nice engine note and a bit of poke.

The 330i meets that criteria. 335i doesnt.

Thanks, everyone.

Any thoughts on the best generation of 3 at the, say, £15k mark? What model year would you aim at if it was your decision?
