Posts like this are why us diesel owners get a hard time, justifiably, from petrol owners.
On behalf of diesel owners everywhere - we're sorry.
You don't do humour do you fox? Do you need me to explain my post out to you?On behalf of diesel owners everywhere - we're sorry.
OK, I understand so here goes - you came back with "try changing gear" i.e. 30 - 70 through the gears, I came back with 4th, 5th, 6th - referring again to in gear times, but it was also a play on your "changing gears" hence smiley face.

No, 30 to 70 in the "right" gear. OK, I understand so here goes - you came back with "try changing gear" i.e. 30 - 70 through the gears, I came back with 4th, 5th, 6th - referring again to in gear times, but it was also a play on your "changing gears" hence smiley face.

325i accelerations: 0- 60 mph 6.3 s, 0- 100 km/h 6.7 s (declared by factory)
Overtaking factors
60-100 km/h through gears (sec): 3.5
80-120 km/h through gears (sec): 4.8
100-180 km/h through gears (sec): 16
320d accelerations: 0- 60 mph 7.6 s, 0- 100 km/h 8 s (declared by factory)
Overtaking factors
60-100 km/h through gears (sec): 4.3
80-120 km/h through gears (sec): 5.6
100-180 km/h through gears (sec): 20
I can agree the 320d may feel faster though, we can feel changes in velocity but can't feel speed itself, hence why most turbo cars feel faster even if they are not.

We're actually more sensitive to rate of change of acceleration, AKA "jerk" :-) ( which is why we like turbos boooOOOOSTing) Mave said:

Don't understand why anyone would want to have a diesel engine in a convertible - the manufacturer goes to all that trouble of putting in sound-deadening material to hide the noise from the engine, then lops the roof off so you're exposed to it in all it's gory detail.
If I was in charge, all convertibles would be powered by petrol.
What do hear in a convertible with the roof down?If I was in charge, all convertibles would be powered by petrol.
I'll answer it for you, its wind noise.
So unless you like to sit in the car stationary with the engine idling, once you're on the move it makes no difference.
It really is a non issue.

Spoken like someone who has never been in a convertible, ever.I'll answer it for you, its wind noise.

And I'll stand by the comment, from the driver's seat you hear the engine no differently roof up or down.
Makes me wonder if you've ever tried one?

A family member has an E350d convertible with the AMG kit, it doesn't make any difference at all. It's quiet and refined. Plus he gets 40 mpg, what's not to like?
It makes no difference if you are ignorant to the alternative. I have had the E350cdi and as good as it is, it is still a diesel and sounds st. I swapped for the E350 V6 petrol, it sounds glorious in comparison.
Oh, and 10-15% behind the diesel MPG wise too, makes the diesel pointless imho.
